WPEN...Part time ?

Rumor has it WPEN is offering a full-time shift (7-10), but only as a PT employee. Do they really think they are going to compete and get a happy employee to be a long-term host on a PT basis. Even the greenest behind the ears kid will get tired of their PT status after 6-9 months. Stability is what PEN nneds. It needs a morning show, a midday show, a night show and weekenders. Without that, they should really let Jody save his opinions for another outlet, b/c there isnt going to be anyone to hear them left soon. I mean even if they got someone who was from a smaller market and let them grow into the position and with the listeners, thats better then what they have now, take a chance on someone you might be rewarded for it in the end.

What that person can do is work part time at WPEN, and then moonlight at WAMS.
It's not so hard. Hope I answered your question. I'm glad I can help you out.

Where is WAMS at??

WAMS is in Newark, Delaware. It is run from a co-owned station in Dover, Delaware. It's Gospel and has been for at least a year. Gets almost all its programming from the bird. The poster seems to think it is still an oldies station with a local morning show. That hasn't been the case for a loooong time. The reason being, they couldn't afford to PAY any employees. You did your shift for free. The poster is rather out of touch.

Stations split full time shifts among two or more persons for a very basic reason. If full time staff members receive benefits (pension plans, heealth and life insurance)then it must be offered to ALL full time staff. If you keep some staff under 20 hours per week, you do not have to provide benefits for them. Most major stations do that these days. So you would also expect a minor station like WPEN to follow suite.

Do you think WIP does that ? I mean come on this is Philadelphia...if you want to compete with WIP you cant do it half-*ss (or part time). Rome is bad enough, Bruno is good, really like his show BUT...a live-and -local AM Drive show drives a station. Furthermore, a good evening show that can get hard-core with a good talent can drive people to that morning show, which should be the anchor to your station. Jody is a nice "name" and he really knows his stuff, but he isnt a star, he is a perfect second fiddle. Plus with the signal upgrade and whatever they are paying Jody...I dont think PEN should think they are a minor station anymore, cause if they do, they are doomed.

Uh, I think that was intended as a joke.

Bill

WIP does it with show producers.

And no, I don't think GM sees WPEN as a minor station. I think of it as a minor station that has long tried to duplicate WIP.

With ESPN Sports Center, it really doesn't matter who your night anchor is. The sports fan is watching TV, not listening to the radio. If WPEN picks up enough live sporting events, it REALLY does not matter who the night talker is at either station. There will be live sports on the radio, not a talk anchor. The talker will only be on a couple nights per week.
