WPEN this evening

Sounds like WPEN is running from Overbrook Park with their old 5,000 watt night pattern tonight. I live about two miles from the WWDB towers, and I can hardly get WPEN. They are stronger over toward Willow Grove, but they fade as you go west on the turnpike, just like old times.

When they're running with 21,000 watts on their new night pattern from East Norriton, they have a killer signal, with wonderfully rich audio.

I guess something up there's getting worked on this evening.

What a waste of a signal for sports talk. Which won't work.

Why don't they try all news next? Or perhaps Lithuanian goat-herding music.

Bill

Thank God you posted this. I was going to but didn't want people to think I was bitching, lol. This started yesterday evening right around 6:45, towards the end of Jim Nettleton's show. Happened again at the same time tonight. Though it did seem the new signal turned on as usual, all I got here in Trenton was the old signal full of drifts and interference. Kind of a bad time for this, and I was hoping to grab some airchecks for the last week, but that may not happen now.

In taping the final weeks of WPEN, I noticed that every evening at 7:15pm they first switch to the old 5Kw night pattern for 30 seconds, while WWDB is playing the signoff announcement. Then, about 10 seconds after WWDB's carrier goes off, WPEN flips to their new 21kW signal, which is much stronger here in western Montgomery county, even though we're on the back end (WWJ side) of their pattern. Last night while taping Blavat, I also noticed that they flipped and stayed at the old 5kW Overbrook night pattern. In the mornings at 6:45am they normally flip directly from 21kW to 5kW daytime signal, but the audio from the 5Kw signal lags the 21kW signal by 5 to 10 seconds. Yesterday morning, for example, 10 seconds of a Bobby Vinton song were repeated after they switched to 5Kw.

With the NAB conference in town, I thought they might have gotten an STA to show off their IBOC system at night (which I assume isn't installed on their 21k nighttime rig) but they weren't running IBOC either.

Why do you think Sports Talk won't work? There is room for two stations in this market! With Tony Bruno and Jody Mac it will work. Oldies is a format on life support. This is a great move.
Also, Greater Media is having success with Ben while other "Jack" format stations like the one in NY are struggling. MMR and MGK are consistent and in top 10. Management seems to be getting it right.

Too late, Bill...Beasley already has booked several well-known Lithuanians from that hot goat-herding rocker in Vilnius, Lithuania...K-BAAAAA...and, will install that format right after WIRED implodes.

Whoever's recording the last few days of oldies

Would you mind converting it to mp3 and posting it on www.yousendit.com? Once you upload the file(s), just have the link e-mailed to yourself and post it here and/or on the aircheck collector's board. Thanks.

I happened to be driving through Philly last night on my way back from Wildwood, and I was interested in driving through WPEN's new nighttime pattern. It obviously wasn't on. At the spot where the Blue Route crosses route one, WPEN was not usable at all. I grew up in Levittown where they never had a great signal next to WTTM, but if WPEN's nighttime was always this bad, there's no way they could have ever competed against the likes of WIP or Wibbage at night

Hope somebody can do this for you, and WPEN sure picked a hell of a time to go back to the cruddy signal. It still doesn't sound right to me.
Edited by JoeyDee_WOGL on 09/24/05 12:03 AM.

I have personally enjoyed WPEN on the occasions when I was able to hear it, but when they DO flip on October 3rd you aren't going to jump off the Ben Franklin are you? It just troubles me that you are soooooooooooo obsessed with the station. It almost troubles me...Now Back To Your Regularly Scheduled Programming!!

Hey, send me an aircheck of WAMS. I prefer it in mono.

I have every right to post observations about any station I so choose. I could really do without the sarcasm. Thanks for playing.

I do have the right to state that you are the Julius May of WPEN. CONGRATULATIONS! hey I wish you all the luck in their new format, 20,000 watt signal, (that's a flock of seagull listeners right there.) Hey forget the Eagles today......WPEN 950 where's it's at....

Re: I've Got It!!!

Hey APCO....

We best quit while we're ahead...apparently we have a "Soon to be former WPEN disgruntled listener" that we seem to be "playing" with! I cannot precisely recall, but did I EVER say that he shouldn't/couldn't post anything about WPEN? I'm thinking NNNNNNNNNNNNNNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!

Perhaps he was offended because I chose the wrong Bridge...Perhaps he will be departing off the top of the Betsy Ross instead!!

October 3rd...The countdown is ON......

Don't know why you picked me to troll on. Look, we all love radio, that's what this should be about. All I want to do is talk radio, weather it be WPEN or WOGL or in between. I'm not some disgruntled fan, just a fan of any kind of radio.

"Oldies is a format on life support. This is

The only thing around here on life support is your brain! It's this moronic mentality led by idiots like you that's killing our music! Thinking this is a great move is like thinking KYW should switch to all heavy metal all the time! Sports is a waste of a great signal, and WPEN will not survive against WIP. One sports station is enough! The only reason Greater Media is doing this is to make money off of gamblers who will stay glued to sports scores to see how much money they won or lost! Modern music is nothing but noise. Anything recorded after about 1979 is nothing but sythesizers. With @#$% idiots like Greater Media it's getting harder and harder to hear real 50s and 60s oldies!

This actually made me laugh out loud.
