WPEN to Go All Sports

Philadelphia will get a new sports station October 3rd, when WPEN switches from its 1 year oldies format to sports. So far Jody MacDonald (of WIP and WFAN)will host afternoons & Jim Rome middays, no other lineup yet. No mention of any affiliation with a network, ESPN is on Trenton signal WPHY 920 calling itself "Philadelphia's Real Sports Station" although it doesn't reach much of the city or parts of the market, suburban WNPV also carries ESPN Nights & weekends, and nearby Wilmington, Delaware has a Fox affiliate at 1290. WFAN also comes in pretty well over most of the area. Can this area support another sports station? Years back 50,000 watt 1210 tried as "The Game" and failed.

I guess Jody Mac is leaving his Sirius deal. I hope he doesn't give up weekends on ESPN1050 in New York because I enjoy his work.

How can they even attempt to try to compete with WIP and not have Bruno on?
Rome's marketting machine is obviously desperate to get him on ANYWHERE, but he'll fail in Philly with that awful punk talk. Bruno is a Philly legend and CAN and will get ratings. WFAN doesn't matter because people in Philly hate New York - and "the game" sucked because they had bad shows. WIP won't lose, but if WPEN does it right, they can take some of the talk radio pie in a city with a tired 1-trick pony station has no competition. Phila. may be the only major city in America with no real talk shows and thus WIP thrives. With Stern going away, the move is brilliant! 25-54 men will now have a choice.

The morning show hasn't been announced yet.

I don't know what they're doing in morning drive, but new sports signon WPEN/950 Philadelphia *will* have Tony Bruno on the air when it starts. (Info courtesy of AllAccess.com, BTW, today.) If I'm not mistaken, his live hours on Sporting News Radio are 8 AM-1 PM ET.

Jody MacDonald is awful..

one of the most overrated personalities in the world...he says NOTHING, states the obvious, is not funny, not entertaining in the least....he was canned in New York because the people there finally caught on that he was boring and dreadful to listen to....and didn't provide much insight that the average fan didn't already know...

philly sports fans are mainly clueless though so some will listen to his show...most won't, however...he will get no ratings.....

the fact that you liked him is embarrassing for you LOL

Geez Terp, is there any New York City radio host (sports or other wise) who you like?

What about the wrestling show in the middle of the night?

Jody Mac! There's a personality that takes me back!

In 1988-89 I used to watch the Headbangers Ball on MTV and then- even though I was not really a wrestling fan- turn on Jody Mac's weekly session with- who was it- Rich Mantuszo or someone like that- who would then tell us who was going to win and what was going to happen in the "squared circle" at 3am!

Just the sort of thing that would turn on a teenage male of the day!

It was an original idea and it worked because of the time slot. Normally I would not want a pro wrestling show on a prestigious station like WFAN- but considering it was 3am on Saturday night/Sun. morning- how else were you going to sell that slot?

Monday at noon- no- middle of the night on a weekend- yes.

The other thing Jody Mac used to do was read the box scores over the air- Rotisserie Roundup. That one was boring and now with the internet it woudl be obsolete, but in 1989 or 1990 it kind of made sense- though it was just filler.

With the count one and one on Jody Mac- now we look at the fact he talked horse racing in his regular mix of sports- getting an additional audience for Jody Mac. Point for him.

He also called the Atlanta Braves dynasty- though a bit early (he picked them to win the NL West in 1990- one year before they started winning. They actually finished in last if I recall correctly in '90).

But here's the final question about Jody Mac. It used to be Jody Mac would really go out of his way to cater to young men- he once made the comment concerning a situation with Luis Polonia being arrested for statutory rape as "it could have happened to me (!)"

Fifteen years later and now in middle age- I'd be curious to know if he makes similiar comments.

Re: Jody MacDonald is awful..

yup...I like Joe Beningo...that's pretty much it....

Jody mac is one of the worst listens in the history of sports radio...ask anyone in the Philly area....

I hear it's only going to be 9 to noon and then the crappy Rome Show comes on Noon to 3. They should only carry Rome from 1 to 3 and do all 4 hours of Bruno. Rome will go over like a lead baloon in Philly.

Joe B was good over nights. His daytime show with Sid Rosenberg is almost unlistenable.
