WPEN: Weird or what?

Last year, Oldies 950 carries the baseball play-offs.
This year, Sports Talk 950 does not.

SO, once again just like a few years ago, Philadelphia area stations do not carry MLB playoffs. Where is 920-ESPN? they advertise on their website "Your home for the playoffs and the 2005 World Series." well??? we're waiting. We don't want to hear ABOUT the game, i'd like to hear THE game itself. for those of you that can get it, 1050-ESPN Radio (WEPN NEW YORK) is carrying all MLB playoff games with conflicts shifting to 1560 Radio Disney (WQEW New York).

Apparently 920 AM WPHY, Trenton is carrying SOME games. They have The Red Sox - White Sox games. They did not take the Pardres - Cardinals game (ran Jim Rome instead).
Of course, 920 AM is not in the Philadelphia radio market. They get an OK signal into lower Bucks, the Northeast, an adjacent slice of Montgomery County and Western Burlington County but they can not claim to cover the Philadelphia market (although they do make that claim).
Interesting WPHY would pass on a week-day game, when you'd think there would be an audience of people without access to cable/satellite TV during working hours.
Also interesting they'd take an American League playoff over a National League playoff in a National League market (WPHY carries regular season Phillies games).
In New York, doesn't Newsradio 88 still get rights to post-season games in which the Yankees play?

The station sounds like a train wreck!

So who is on in the morning before Bruno? Who is on after Jody Mac? Someone better get Jody a partner soon, he is smart but so boring. Is Sid Rosenberg available?!? Is sports talk 950 affiliated with Fox Sports, ESPN??? It sounds terrible and low budget. It even makes the horrid product on WIP sound good.

It's pretty awful all around. One local host....one. That's dismal. They can try to tout the syndicated stuff as an advantage, but I believe local tumps national any day of the week when it comes to talk, especially sports.

The sports update anchor in the morning was barely audible and what I could hear was hesitant, flat, flubbed repeatedly and it sounded like a painfully forced. Jody Mac is ok, but I agree with the partner comment.

Then there's the website...a nearly static page that looks like a sixth grader designed it in PowerPoint.

This is how, with a month's notice, WPEN makes its foray into sports talk? With no promotion and a product nearly devoid of local flavor? At least as WIP eased into sports, they had a comparitively strong base to build on with the Eagles and Flyers and some early entries in sports talk before the total conversion. WPEN had zilch, and it sounds like they still do.

I wouln't have thought it was possible, but they may actually do worse now than with oldies.

Yes. As the Yankees flagship, they do get to carry the games in the New York market. However, ESPN Radio has the MLB playoff package. I believe that the stations on the Yankees network can't pick up the playoff games unless they are ESPN Radio affiliates. So, in the NYC area you can pick up the Yankee games on either 880 or ESPN 1050. Before ESPN Radio had it's NYC outlet on 1050, WFAN 660 would carry a bunch of playoff games.

Re: The station sounds like a train wreck!

The morning show is from Fox Sports Radio. The local morning updates are apparently recorded, because at 5:55 Tuesday they were still giving updates from Sunday's games, saying "in Monday night football Green Bay played Carolina" with no score. They seem to be running reruns of Tony Bruno & Jody Mac in the evening. I've also heard Sporting News Radio shows later.

As the saying goes, you get one chance to make a first impression...I can't see this making a good impression on fans who don't have a particular loyalty already to Jody Mac (or Bruno/Rome).

Why not just watch them on TV?
