WPFB-AM off the air

Surprised no one has posted on this. WPFB 910 has been dark for about a week. Did NKU decide to shut it down? Is anyone aware of plans to turn in the license? Has it been sold?

Always fun to check what can be heard on a rarely blank frequency...unfortunately 30 miles south of Indianapolis, IBOC hiss from 920 in Lafayette,IN (5KW at 100 miles) is all that's on 910 here. Grumble...

No signal received so far today on 910-kc as I checked from my home in northeast Hamilton County. I couldn't pick up any other signals on that frequency.

It would be a real shame if WPFB-AM disappears. I interviewed there in 1969 while a student at the University of Dayton (didn't get the job!). AM radio was still "king" at the time and WPFB was a well established station in SW Ohio for many years. Even its nighttime 100 watts seemed to get out fairly well in those days.

Here in Lexington, KY, I usually receive a mix of WPFB and WSFE from Somerset, KY on 910 during the day. Now... WSFE is "in the clear" as they say....

I applied there too...just before I moved to Indiana in 1977...it was my last shot at staying in Cincy. The engineer who interviewed me asked how important keeping the lawn mowed was around an AM tower...how much it would affect the signal. Having worked at WNOP and seeing the negligible effect from that, I answered accordingly. That was the wrong answer and my fate was sealed as a future Hoosier. Obviously it was not easy to get a job there!

Nothing new on file with the FCC... Anyone who would pay the asking price is "coo-coo for coco-puffs" ::)

How much is the asking price for this WPFB-AM? Dose this price include any real estate??

Here in Columbus, Ohio, WVSG, ex WOSU AM820 was put up for sale on January 1, 2011. It wasn't sold until September 1, 2011. So, sales like this
can take time I was told. WOSU-AM sold for two million dollars, including the 40 acres of land at their night-time tower site.

Called the WPFB studio. The person at the studio didn't even know WPFB-AM was off the air but he did say NKU has been trying to sell the station for months but have had no takers as of yet.
He also said the station may have been taken dark because their were rumors going around the station about going 910 going dark if it couldn't be sold.

Sounds like NKU doesn't even want to bother paying the electric bill over at WPFB-AM and is why they took it dark. Not even worth the bother to
keep it(910AM) on the air.

Among the applications and permits it shows a program testing authority back in June but no further activity. If they just shut it down without notifying the FCC and getting an STA to go dark such as WSTV has done in Steubenville, they will have nothing to sell as the license will have been surrendered de facto.

If no one there is aware that the AM is off the air then they are not qualified to own either an AM nor the FM and the licenses should be cancelled for both stations. Even in these lax days of enforcement and record keeping they must have to keep some logs and the meter readings still.

I can just hear the college kid who answered the phone saying: What's AM?
Or...I don't get up before PM...sorry.

Found this on WPFB-AM being sold. Click here for the rest:

Station’s format may change
WPFB’s owner is taking bids for the radio signal and its building.

MIDDLETOWN —
Middletown’s longtime radio station WPFB (910 AM) will likely change hands again.

But according to Chuck Miller, WNKU’s general manager, the plan was always to sell the AM signal and concentrate on the operations of the FM signal. It’s the FM signal, he said, that is a better platform because of its audio quality and reach.

Miller said WNKU did not need to purchase the AM signal at the time the FM was purchased, but did so largely because it expedited the sales process.

NKU is accepting bids for the signal, the WNKN-FM/WPFB AM Tower system located at 4505 Central Ave. and the building located on the property.

The due date for bid proposals is Nov. 30.

IT looks like NKU hasn't received any bids for WPFB-AM. Chuck Miller, WNKU’s general manager, told me the station hasn't gone
dark so maybe they are having technical problems. Is WPFB-AM still off? We can't hear it here in Columbus.

Also, found this on the NKU bidding process for WPFB-AM. This has now past(see above).

From the WNKU website:

WNKU is pleased to announce that 910 WPFB-AM in Middletown, OH and translator 94.5 FM in Port Union/West Chester, OH are now for sale. For information on the bidding process please go to http://procurement.nku.edu/bids/current1.php. All calls of inquiry should be directed to NKU’s Procurement Services department. The WPFB-AM GM has this to say about WPFB-AM being off the air:

I've been out of town for a week and am following up on 910. Seems we have an issue. Will confirm soon.

Chuck

Duh! A station that's on-the-air is probably easier to sell than one that's gone dark. Still sad to see a heritage am station in our area not being utilized to potential.

Surprised Joe Mullins hasn't expressed an interest. I think his dad was a legend there.
