WPFM Tribute Site on the air!!

the site is airing dead air (oops)

and yes, late 70's: (from my CD stash) Time-Life AM Gold\Alan O'Day --AM Gold- 1977 16 Undercover Angel.wav

This site is awsome, but the songs need to be pitched up 2% like the real PFM...lol. Charlie, get the title and artist widget going...lol.

hey....this is an authentic 80's station......in the 80's they didn't have title and artist info....quitchurbitchin

ahhh.. what's the internet? (i was listening to WYYY back in the 80s)

Tribute site was live Saturday night. Pretty good stuff. Instant requests. Now that did not happen in the 80's.

Love the music on the Great 108 WPFM tribute site. Hearing the jock's breaks and mentions of businesses that I am sure are long gone really bring back the memories. Loved hearing the 'PFM jingles, don't recall hearing them, when exactly were they used?

I didn't make it down to PCB til 1981. At that point they seemed to be a very rock oriented CHR.

This WPFM chart from November 1979 seems very rock oriented as well, not unlike what WLS Chicago was up to at that point. http://www.flickr.com/photos/7576734@N02/1448578998/

My question is what formats did they do in the 70's or before that. Did they partner with an AM or was it always a stand alone FM? The FCC database says they signed on in 1964.

WPFM did sign on in 1964 with studios at Capt Anderson's Restaurant as WMAI-FM. The owners of Capt Anderson's put the station on the air for the sole purpose of distributing Muzak on the SCA channel since they owned the Muzak Franchise for most of the panhandle including Ft. Walton, Panama City and Tallahassee. They programmed "beautiful music" as it was called then on the "main channel". They used an old Schaefer 800 reel to reel type automation using 6 Ampex 450 players. Even the spots were on reel to reel on a machine called a "spotter". Spots were recorded and then spliced into the "spot reel" with clear tape between spots. A mechanical counter kept up with what spots were cued up by counting the number of time the clear tape allow a light to illuminate a photocell.....when it worked, it work very well. There was a tower on top of the restaurant until about 5 years ago that supported a large light which illuminated the parking lot....this was the STL tower for the original WMAI...the original call letters before they were changed to WPFM....I can't remember exactly when they switched to Rock but it was in the very early 70s I believe. Maybe someone else can fill in the holes.

By the way, I had SEVERAL beers with the WPFM Tribute site dude tonight at Schooners. He was in town on family matters.

How can this site be "off the air"? Do they have a McMartin web encoder? Maybe Charlie can fix the low voltage supply on the website.....

CCENG === Tribute Site operator okay? Maybe to many beers in the sun with you. Didn't get to listen to it all week, come back and its off net air??? At least it's on the more than 98.1.

hmmmm....I have been gone all week to the NAB in Vegas....I will call the mystery man tomorrow and find out what's going on with it

I hope it gets fixed soon... I'd like to check it out.

Back when I still lived in PC, I bought an old promo wristwatch with the PFM80's logo off of eBay. I have no idea why, but I still have it.

had some major equipment failures while i was out of town...the tribute site is back up and operating...it is also on Twitter...theGreat108WPFM
enjoy!

off air. can you try broadcasting in stereo using the HQ settings on ustream?

-Rob

Are any Maddie Blake shows being broadcast? Any Kent Baily shows being broadcast??

jeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeesus F Christ Rob......can you back it down a notch? The guy is doing the best he can........HQ stream....give me a fu**ing break. You wouldn't know what good radio was in the 80's if it bit you in the ass......ok, Tibbs, I feel better now.

oh....one more thing for the rest of you....since rob will not know what I am talking about......we have located some cassettes which include Birdman and Lou's last show on PFM plus many other things....as soon as I can get these tapes over to the East, I am sure our 108 guru will include them in the webcast.
