WPFM Upgrade

The current tower has had it's share of issues. IIRC, there was a TV station onthat stick and there were quite a few additional pieces of equipment that caused interference and other issues that screwed the full potential.

TV Tower....yes....belongs to Channel 7. Equipment causing problems.....no. WPFM Antenna was never "optimized" for the large face of the TV tower....eventhough it was replaced several years ago......go figure.

sounds like a good idea maybe its reach close to Tallahassee or maybe like 94.5 WFLF/WFLA singal type. But why this? 98,500 watts now on the WJHG-DT tower to 54,000 watts on the new tower? 1st I thought they were going to downgrade to a weak singal but i guess im wrong.

It's definitely looking like they'll lose some coverage towards Dothan, at least on paper. 107.9 is an interesting frequency for me in Baldwin County, AL. Most nights it's Kicker 108 from Biloxi but some nights WPFM is the dominant station. Looks like I'll have even less chance to hear the Panama City station once it moves.

Maybe it will get to Crawfordville, Louis! I haven't seen their application but I'm guessing they are able to cut down on the power by adding antenna height.

I'm in the coverage area of WFSD-LP, also on 107.9. I'm about a mile and a half from WFSD's
site.

The coverage maps over on radio-locator.com show that the new coverage area will be identical to the old coverage area. They just added the names of a few more towns to the map. Didn't move any of the circle thingys.

That's quite a power decrease, 54,000 watts? At least where I live is now being shown :)

I hope their signal won't suck like HMN's does.

always take tower height over power....it always wins.....sounds like a big decrease in power but believe it or not, 54kw and 98kw will not make much difference.....believe me

I like 107.9 PFM this station always party all the time 24/7. We will see how the new singal and height if the FCC gets a okay singal to get them to change the upgrade. Who is doing the Club La Vela thing right now? I know PFM and Island 106 does it back and forth each year.

Why does HMN's signal suck then? There at 50,000 watts. This is almost identical to what 107.3 did here.

-Rob

The center of radiation is moving a few miles southeast, therefore there will be a loss of coverage to the northwest since overall the coverage will be the same.

As for HMN I think the signal is fine. I get zero reception issues anywhere in Pensacola or Baldwin County. The only way its noticeably weaker than the 100 kW signals is the flakey HD. I don't think WPFM runs HD so the drop in power shouldn't be an issue.

And while I know it is generally better to have height than just power, don't the lower powered stations suffer more during intense tropo?

Hey Louis,

I just got a note that says Kick'n 103.5 will be holding an event at La Vela. I am
acquainted with one of the folks that work at Powell Broadcast so I am pretty sure this is for real.

Alan - that sounds like a road trip!

How's things going for Powell in PCB? I mainly just miss the Double OO daze.

Hey Tibbs,

My stepdaughter and family live near Panama City now, so I am always ready to head to the beach! Told her it was appropriate that they just moved to Transmitter Road. It's about two hours from Tallahassee.

I've only heard Powell's "Kick'n" station (country) so far. Definitely fewer spots than WPAP. They
seem to be a good company from what I've heard. I know PC is a pretty tough market. I wish
them well following Double Uh-Oh. They may be having to tunnel those stations out of a hole.

Huh? ??? Alan your saying that that club music at night at Club La Vela is on a country station 103.5 ? Most of the time is 107.9 PFM do the Club La Vela. Club La Vela is Top 40/Dance/Hip Hop

Louis, yes, a country station is doing a special night there. First time I have known a country station to do this.

Rob, it has been rebranded as Kick'n 103.5, and call letters changed from WAKT to WKNK.

Wasn't Transmitter Road called WDLP Road many years ago?

Incidentally, WPFM's former sister station (1430 AM WLTG, formerly WWWQ and before that WPCF) is now in the old WDLP building on 15th St. I worked at what was then "3WQ" in 1982/83. And I worked at WPFM for exactly one night when Skip Bishop was short-handed.
