WPGA-FM

My sources tell me the AMs (WNEX-1400 and WPGA-980) have flipped from News/Talk to an Urban Gospel format, along with a translator at 100.5 pinned to WNEX.

Corrections? I've been out of the market for over two years and some of my sources may be full of bovine excrement.

If no one else knows, I will confirm the next time I stumble through Macon. It may be a while.

Word is that WPGA-FM is going to go Classic Country.... That's real smart (not) they're going to give up a format that attracts the most desirable demographic Women 25-54 to go to a format that attracts 65% men 35% women 50 plus years of age... Yea that makes sense..

That tells me that the shots are being called out in Timbukthree somewhere, not locally. Where is the logic in swapping the most "spendiferous" demo for one which tends to sit on its wallet?

No, Witchlover, the calls are being made locally. WPGA (Register Communications) is a locally-owned operation. For those who don't know:

They're in a less-than-admirable position, with a Class A FM that doesn't adequately cover the entire Macon, GA metro (especially the northern part of Bibb County, and on into Jones and Monroe County, where the money is), two simulcast low-power AM's that can't seem to sustain any traction (now with an FM translator serving the Macon area), and a TV that gave up (or lost, depending on whom you ask) their ABC affiliation 18 months ago and are now an independent. They also have a division that makes and sells the RDS "Phantom" automation system for radio.

The FM (Mix 100.9) has been doing a library-based AC format for a few years, after being a Hot AC for awhile, and an Urban before that. Their morning show is a locally-produced topical talk-fest that covers a range of topics, from politics to pop culture, hosted by two veteran local radio personalities, with news anchored by a third veteran radio personality. It's aired on TV and radio.

In a market where Cumulus and Clear Channel own the majority of the stations, and the revenue, it's a tough row to hoe being an independent. Whatever they choose to do with the station, I wish them success. I wouldn't want to be in their shoes...

Wait, I AM in their shoes, kinda. An independent in a very small over-radio'ed market with a limited signal against some large clusters (Clear Channel included)!

I like classic country; wish we could have a sustainable station playing the format here in Savannah. I realize that stations in that situation are never going to compete head-to-head with the clusters: The differences in signal and resources are just too great. I wonder if WPGA wouldn't be better advised to identify a niche market that the big guys are not covering and make it their own. Perhaps this is what they are attempting to do with the classic country format, but the comments in this thread lead me to think that this decision is not very well thought out. I have my fingers crossed for them, but I do not think they have chosen wisely.

There already is a Classic Country Rim shot in the market. They may be better off trying Smooth Jazz, or AAA as these are very niche high income sequin formats. The Smooth Jazz could do very well with both the General and Urban markets. With all the Colleges the AAA would also be a good option. Even sticking with the current format doing more promotions and marketing would be better than Classic Country... I think the new GM is just changing everything for the sake of it, hoping to fix a sales problem by changing formats... THAT won't work, he needs to fix the sales issues...

RadioActiveSales, anyone who knows that market and that operation at Register knows fully well that it makes no difference who the "GM" is, or the "Sales Manager" or the "Janitor." The decisions on what happens at that facility come from one person and one person only, and changes may be made on a whim without much consideration. They may be doing AC one day, Classic Country the next, and Russian Mob Contemporary the next.

It's his right; they're his stations. But regardless of who's in the trenches there, the only plan that counts is the one from the top banana.

Now, I would listen to Russian Mob Contemporary. That's a format I really can get into. ;D

If it's Georgia Eagle Broadcasting it's more like a rim shot in the toilet. Who cares about canned radio with low-rent local production? Let WPGA get in the game and air Classic Country.

I believe the classic country rimshot being referred to by the original poster is WMCG/104.9, licensed to Milan and operated from Dublin. That's owned by State Broadcasting (Dowdy).

Dowdy, as in the Southern Mississippi Dowdy's? Owners of (among others) Biloxi market stations: WZKX, WGCM, WZNF, WROA.

Classic Country is already in the market with the new simulcast WBML-AM 900/WXKO-AM 1440 and FM 105.9 (LP)...full format and studio up soon. Just a jukebox now until Danny Evans, Nathan Hale and the Crew get it ready.
