Philadelphia had an FM talker, WWDB, which may have been ahead of its time.
Today, FM is the medium best able to turn back (if any aspect of analog radio can turn back) the onslaught of satellite radio.
Clear Channel was able to lure Quinn from WRRK in part with the promise of syndication. Then, Clear Channel's Premiere subsidiary was engineered to shift Rush from KDKA to WPGB.
There is evidence that some of the older right-wing talkers are losing their appeal. Some reports indicate Hubbard was as happy to find someone to replace Rush as CC was to get him. (Not quite on the same level as KDKA's feigned joy at having to snatch O'Reilly from WPTT, still ...)
Not everyone realizes Rush is on FM. I actually had an in-law ask why Rush was no longer being heard in Pittsburgh.
WPGB's success isn't being totally emulated — CC, for what it's worth, kept ABC there, but put Fox on most of its other news-talk stations.
Finally, WPGB manages to put a decent newscast on, while KDKA is getting as strident at times as its TV sibling. OK, it's WPXI sound, it's Cleveland-based, and KD may still be best for breaking stories, but WPGB usually doesn't give the listener an excuse to flip to KD on the hour (though I will go to KQV at :05).

I enjoy listening to WPGB, and while I think they are a great talk station, I think they lack on local news. From what I understand, they do not deliver that locally, it is sent to a station in Cleveland and re-fed to Pittsburgh. Why can't they just do it here in Pittsburgh?

Because they already have a station in Cleveland that can serve up news to Cleveland, Pittsburgh, Johnstown, Erie, Wheeling, Steubenville, Youngstown, Can-kron, and wherever else... if they put a bureau in Pittsburgh, it'd be redundant and more importantly, they'd have to PAY someone!!

I'm not sure if WTAM is feeding WWVA/Wheeling, or if that task falls to WTVN/Columbus.
