WPGC FM & AM

Had on XM Radio today and it was on the 60s station. I heard the guy say WPGC and I was wondering why he was saying WPGC. Today XM 60s was doing oldies stations from Washington D.C. and I guess WPGC 95.5 was oldies. Never knew that until now. Well my question is when did WPGC flip from this format to their current format which is Rhymthic/CHR. Just wondering thanks.

WPGC (1580, simulcast on 95.5) was the big Top 40 gun in the 60's and 70's.

In the mid 80's, 95.5 went AC as Classy 95 (WCLY). With too many in that format, it went rhythmic a year or two later (and back to the WPGC call letters).

XM does occasional tributes to legendary Top 40 stations of the 60's.

There's an awesome WPGC tribute site at http://www.amandfmmorningside.com/

They were doing tributes to several DC area stations including WBIG, WEAM, and WPGC. It was good to hear Dave Adler and Johnny Dark as well as some of the OLDIES (not big) 100 airchecks again. I lived in the DC area during Oldies 100's early years. It's a shame CC got a hold of it and destroyed it. I listened to it on line in recent months. The music didn't sound too good, and they got rid of some great talent. It was a hollowed out shell of its former self.

It's weird hearing people get nostalgic over the Oldies 100 days. When I was growing up, it was OK100--The Sound of the City. Then it was WDJY. To me, 100.3 was always the frequency to hear R&B music. But there are those who will remember the old, old days of WFAN, when they played spanish.

1986 or 1987 if I remember correctly.

Re: WPGC FM & AM

I know one thing. WPGC 95.5 current format is one of the best in the nation. That station's playlist is on point when it comes to music. I'm just confused how do they list themselves as Rhythmic/CHR when they are oblviously urban.

Re: WPGC FM

Listing WPGC as a top-40 or CHR rather than urban has been an issue since the day they came on! They have always told me that there is more ad dollars for a top-40 than an urban. So it is like calling a big apartment complex with no trees "Wooded Acers". It looks good on paper!

WCLY-FM became WPGC-FM in May 1987

Re: WPGC FM & AM

I used to listen to Harv Moore "The Morning Mare" on the old (WPGC) in the 60s when they were THE big top 40 flamethrower of the mid Atlantic and pretty much a market dominator in DC.
Definately lengendary!
