North Georgia WPGY stunning

The 98.1 and 93.7 translators are playing what might be public domain music complete with scratchy records recording. I can only guess they are going to save months music royalties. There is a voice that says sports is coming soon. Pickens County is technically in the Atlanta ratings area. Not sure about Gilmore County. They were playing oldies with too many obscure songs. This is part of the Carriage cluster 101.1, 98.1, 93.7 and 1580.

I believe they are are playing 10 or less songs back to back. They do play the same 8 commercials they played before the flip. If were one of those sponcers, I would want an "adjustment" on my bill.

You mentioned 101.1. Is WLJA still on the air? Used to listen to them some, when we lived in Summerville. One thing about them, they must have had one stable program log, seemed like it never changed, most of the preachers must have been on there forever.

Oh yeah, also, on one of my ID tapes, I have one from 1580, while passing through the area, headed somewhere, can't remember where we were headed. I do remember though, their STL (as it were) was a phone line.

WLJA is trying to pick up The Fish's audience by playing Gospel tracks off of Country Stars' albums. They have a really good sales team that could sell a 1khz test tone.

IMHO: There still is a format hole for a COMMERCIAL Contemporary Christian Music Station in Atlanta. The old Fish regularly out performed KLove in the 6+ ratings when we could see KLove.

WLJA AM now WPGY started out with studios on the AM transmitter sight. The local phone company ETC handled the STL to the original FM site when they were 93.5. A station in the Chattanooga market had to pay them for moving to 101.1 so they could power up. When they moved their studios to Jasper, for a time the AM was just carrying the FM. When they split the AM to WPGY they might have used a phone line briefly but when they got HD on the FM they started using the HD2 signal along with 93.7 and latter 98.1. Over half of the AM's ground radials are in a small swamp and have carroded. They were were using an old tube transmitter for the AM when I tried to buy the station.

IMHO: If it wasn't for the 93.7 translator 1580 would be long gone like 1400 and 770 in North GA are.

Them playing Gospel cuts from Country singers is nothing new for 'LJA, they did that back when we lived there, sixteen years ago. IMHO, they've always (since I heard them) tried to hold both hands, the church and the world, an unequal yoke. Thought it strange, from a format sense, to do Gospel music most of the time, but Classic Country for like three hours a day. That area needs a commercial CCM station, like the south needs another church, once again, IMHO.

Thanks for the station history, Roger on that. If memory serves me correctly, a lady by the last name of Rooker owned 'LJA, back when it was on 93.5. Can't remember the name of that older Gentleman who did a lot of the DJing, back when we lived there, maybe Byron something-or-other. Whenever the phone line was used on 1580, I do have a tape of it somewhere LOL. Got out of the ID collecting hobby, after a couple kids came along and I started working at a plant some years ago. MY ID tapes (audio scrapbooks as it were) are presently in storage.

I believe you are talking about Bryon Dobbs (not sure of the spelling). IIRC He used to own 105.5 in Canton. It ended up on 105.7 and LMAed to Clear Channel now iHeart. He an a partner bought WLJA from Ms.Rucker after 2000 (?). He died a couple years ago and I believe his partner bought his estate out. Then it was sold to the folks behind Carriage Kia.

I haven't heard any Preachers weekdays and they have petty much dropped the Southern Gospel and are supposedly featuring religious songs done by County Artists according to their Pickens Progress article several months ago. I believe a former Fish salesman is running the show. The did pickup the former mid-day or evening (?) announcer former the Fish Atlanta.

Personally I would go CCM on 101.1 but most folks want to cede CCM to KLove which is a shame. The Fish was successful 6+ against KLove in Atlanta, but Corporate issues (debt) got in the way of Christian Programming. Salem is

Personally I believe KLove should be concentrating on acquiring signals in areas where there is no CCM stations. The purchase of the Fish stations did away with "guilt free" CCM music. How many folks give their "donations" to keep kLove music going instead of their local Churches or charities?

A non profit has expenses and I understand they have to cover expenses from their listeners. What percentage of the KLove donations actually help local people in that market. The funds raised to cover on Fish station's expenses and DEBT could have gone to local missions helping to spreading Christianity and helping people in need instead attempting to dominate CCM. The expenses of the Fish station were paid by the advertisers. They never asked for gifts to "keep the music ministry going". I believe 104.7 did some some fund raising for causes but it never benefited the Fish Atlanta.

Missed this one, somehow. IMHO as well, unfortunately most AM stations these days, are nothing but placeholders/excuses for FM translators.

That's sad, all the way 'round. Besides the fact that I'm not a CCM fan, I don't support Klove by any stretch of the imagination. It's all feel good stuff, all that "music" is. They may "reach" folk, but where are they taking them? It's nowhere different than where they were. As a business model, it's bad too, nothing but worldliness and playing on folk's emotions to get money that folk should give to their local church, etc, not to build a huge empire for a "Christian" bigwig.
