WPHT major on-air announcement tomorrow at 11 AM

1210 WPHT-AM running a promo saying “listen tomorrow at 11 AM for a major on air personality announcement.” The info comes from a source at the station.

Re: WPHT announces that Dick Morris is the new afternoon host

And here I thought that it was going to be Al Gardner.

Again, anybody knows what happened to Al?

As to Morris, that is an interesting choice. I'll turn in to listen initially.

This was probably the Morris annoucement. He has always come off as a snake oil salesman to me. Entertaining but so are snake oil salesmen.

Agreed on Morris predictions. He was a regular on Howie Carr show in New England till finally listeners complained they had enough of him!

1210 AM's high profile move by hiring Dick Morris, reminds me of when its predecessor WCAU-AM hired Frank Rizzo to do afternoons in the late 80s.

Zzzzzzzz

More conservative insight! There's certainly not enough of that on talk radio! Forget about the rest of the pie, let's all tear at this one shrinking slice. Anyways- they're banking on retaining more who flip-flop between Hannity and 1210, and apparently the current two just aren't cutting it. Really unfortunate as Rich & Steve were the only local talk show I'd regularly check out. Hopefully they keep Steve around in some capacity, maybe nights or late nights. I couldn't listen to Rich alone at night but enjoyed the debates his pairing with Steve created.

Defending WPHT for a second, did the CBS management really have a choice here? Someone with the name recognition and profile of Dick Morris was willing to host a 4-hour daily talk show after your "signature" talent decides to leave (God I hate to call Smerconish that) and your station's ratings are in the tank. It's pretty hard to get lower ratings than 'PHT is getting right now, and it would be hard for Morris to actually scare more listeners away than have already switched to FM.

Personally, I think 1210 should bring back the Big Talker branding and really try to rebuild the station with the Phillies games starting again. I would say hiring a big name syndicated talent would help too, but IQ seems to have all the options that might bring more listeners to the station. 'PHT is just in a REALLY bad place right now. Baseball will help, but the station is going to have to make people want to continue to listen beyond that.

I think WPHT is fine in the morning with Chris Stigall and also Dom. And "His Honor" was great when he was on 1210! I like DM, but he does have that Snake Oil thing going on.......Also sick of people wining about conservative talkers. Liberal talkers don't get ratings because they have no truth to tell.

This is actually a good replacement, because Morris is a political operative who is less of an ideologue than most think. He advised Bill Clinton. FYI in Dick's first book, he takes credit for telling Bill to sign the TCA of 1996. He said it was good politics.

Wonder if Dick will also take Smerconish's syndicated stations.

Morris is smart and is a good choice to replace Smerconish. I have to wonder if CBS is making any money though with PHT and its poor ratings. That said, Stigall and Dom are very good. This should be a good line up but time will tell if ratings improve. I honestly believe getting rid of Smerconish is the best thing that could have happened to them. I wouldn't be surprised if he is the reason the ratings are in the toilet. Blaming his failures by calling the audience angry, old, and white is a disgrace so good riddance to him. This shows how dismal his show has become and I've lost any respect I ever had for him. As much as I wanted to see PHT switch to oldies/standards, I am happy about their new line up and I wish Morris the best. But if things don't improve now, they ought to turn the place into an automated jukebox.

@NHDude: The only reason 1210 had that "Big Talker" branding in the first place was because it was justified by the "big name" national hosts on their air in Rush, Beck and Hannity. In fact, I'm surprised 106.9 hasn't jumped on the name by now.

I thought 1210 was going to announce that it was going back to oldies, as some on RD have suggested. ::) :-[

That's a very good point. I just always liked The Big Talker branding when I listened at night from New Hampshire. WPHT has a rather good signal at night up here.

could 1210 not find a big LOCAL name to fill the slot?

They seem to like JD Hayworth, and I'm willing to bet he's not local, esp since he cant pronounce some towns
