WPHT on WOGL-HD3

Sad. In the late 40s and early 50s, the FCC was begging broadcasters to take FM licenses. Many of them did (some did not and eventually lived to regret it). Then broadcasters simulcast AM on FM. There were a few classical stations and elevator music stations and a few people who wanted that bought FM radios. But people were not buying FM radios to listen to what they could hear on the AM radio they had already bought and paid for.

Then the FCC forced stations in the top 50 markets to do something with their FM signals (at least half the time). And when FM offered something new and different, people started buying and listening to FM radios. Underground Rock (the forerunner of AAA) and Oldies were among the first new formats that caught on but there was a lot of experimenting early on. FM got buzz.

Now the current generation of broadcasters wants to simulcast their remaining AM stations on HD2 or HD3 and they expect people will rush right out to buy HD Radios. "Those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it." - Santayana

It makes sense for broadcasters to put a format which had a following but was dropped for lack of advertiser support on HD2 or HD3. I would make sense to experiment with new formats (rather than rush out to flip to the latest fad - like Jack/Ben). But not simulcasting.

Speaking of HD radio, I've got to give props to ccrane's FM antenna that looks like a glorified T-wire antenna. The ad in the catalog said it worked wonders with HD radio. Living here in Schuylkill County all the way out near Pottsville, I figured it'd be the perfect spot to try it out for 30-some bucks. Living out here, you're lucky to get Philly stations in analog let alone digital. I am shocked to get WBEN's HD sub-stations as well as WRDW's and WYSP's. Those are the only three stations from Philly I can get in HD with some playing around with the antenna. Still impressive nonetheless. WBEN's signals are the best.

At 9PM ID said WPHT-HD and WOGL HD-3.. I will have to get me an HD radio again I wonder if they work any better now? last time I had one about 2 years ago it keep going in and out.

It was great hearing the first playoff game on WOGL-HD3 driving in western Montgomery co, where WPHT's HD signal is spotty. HD reception at home on Sangean HDT-1X tuner connected to roof-mounted APS-13 FM antenna yields 51 HD signals on 28 frequencies from Phila, Lehigh Valley, Lancaster co and Wilmington. Replacing car's stock antenna with a 30" whip extended Phila HD range another 10-15 miles west into eastern Berks co.

So now there is no need to spew IBUZ on 1200 and 1220. The IBUZ transmitter at WPHT-AM is wasting electricity.

Actually IBUZ was off because they turned it off for the game and it was great. Does anyone know if they moved WOGL's antenna higher? I tuned in this morning and all 3 WOGL HD's had a much better signal strength. I expected it to be weaker and I know CBS is not about to buy a new transmitter for the 3 of us listening to HD radio. I did notice there was no WOGL HD@ for the last several days and that there analog signal was crisp and clear and sounded so much better too bad they had to turn the IBOC back on.

Why are they keeping 1210,1060,610 in HD on the am? Now that they are all on the FM HD-2&3 with an HD radio you can get them in HD so just Kill the AM-HD..

I totally agree. Anyone who has an HD radio is going to tune into the FM HD signal. AM is such a waste who needs all the IBOC crap on AM? Oh but wait there are probably people that will tune there HD radio's to an AM station, the same people that can't figure out that you need to turn on the cable box and the TV at the same time in order to watch TV. They also don't own a computer or cell phone and drive a Crown Victoria wear flared polyester pants and wrap around sun glasses.

WOGL HD-3 is spotty for me at best here in Norristown. On the home unit, an Insignia HD Radio/DVD-player combo that's been discontinued for some time AIUI, it manages to bring in about 5 minutes worth of continuous audio and then it drops it like a hot potato. No other FM HD signal that I can receive does that for me.

On the AM side, things are somewhat bleaker. The only HD signals that can be processed are KYW-1060AM, WWDB-860AM, and maybe WPEN-950AM. WIP-610AM sounds bearable through the static and WPHT-1210AM is a lost cause. The only other clearly heard through static stations are WFIL-560AM, WFYL-1180AM, WURD-900AM, and WNTP-990AM. Granted, the latter bunch don't broadcast in HD, but I'm not exactly pleased.

As for my portable Insignia, WOGL-FM's HD signal is an odd one. It cuts off even in clear direct sight-lines of the Roxborough antennas. I mean, really, it sounds like a rimshot even at times when I'm in spitting distance of the transmitter. Something is amiss with that...why?

I usually loose the WOGL HD2 signalin Maple Glenn but this morning I drove all the way to work in Colmar and didn't loose it until I hit Richardson Rd. So the signal has improved. That's why I think they moved the antenna higher on the tower. Can anyone confirm that?

New HD transmitter, still tweeking it. WOGL HD4 will be on the air 2011.

That explains it. As soon as I heard the WOGL-HD3 ID on 1210, I immediately tried to pull it in (2 PM today) and got a brief capture and then an "unavailable". I'm 7 miles north of the city and can pull in WSTW HD-2 and 3 crystal clear, so I figured it was a WOGL issue. The sound I did hear on OGL-HD3 was a bit compressed and at a lower level than other stations. Frankly, WPHT-HD sounded better. But, once tweaked, it will be nice to have PHT on FM for the days when conditions wreak havoc with the AM HD reception.

Why has it taken so long to put PHT on an FM subchannel? MLB rights, or the transmission capability?

And what will be on the HD4? Something from out of the market perhaps?

Can anyone confirm if WOGL-HD3 also carries the Phillies games that 1210 airs?

I think "vmelis" on the previous page of this thread already has...
