WPHT/Phillies

Does anyone think that the Phillies will remain with WPHT in 2012 and if so, why?

Yes I do. They don't want GM putting it on their sport talker. As for 94 WIP too many games that conflict with other sport programing on WIP such as the 76ers in April/May. Flyers in April, May, & September, and Eagles in August & September.

Yes, because it's about the only thing giving 1210 a pulse at the moment. Plenty of play by play already on 94/610, so there's not a pressing need to fill something, save for the dog days of summer, when they may be content with getting geared up for Eagles training camp anyway.

They absolutely should be on WIP. Put them on 1210 for the 4 times a year they conflict with the Eagles.

I read here when WIP-FM launched that Phillies 2011 postseason games will be on WIP-FM in addition to 1210. I hope that's true.

I hope not. 1210 is horrible. I remember as a kid hearing the Phils on 1210 in Binghamton, NY and in Myrtle Beach, SC, but now their signal barely covers Montgomery County. There is something seriously wrong with the signal.

If I was the Phillies ownership, I would demand an FM clearance. With two FM sportstalkers in town, why not? Now that the ballclub is 1-A in importance (along with the Eagles) in this town, I wouldn't accept my games on AM. That's not where my fans are. And CBS isn't going to give the team MORE money so they can keep in on 1210. My guess is it will be on one of the two FM sports stations for opening day 2012.....

1210 is inadequate in greater Philadelphia. It would be in trouble without the Phillies.

There's no reason the Phillies shouldn't demand games on FM in Philadelphia. The Flyers, who will be on FM, don't have nearly the fan base. The NHL is definitely worse off in a lot of places, but still not as strong as it was 20 to 35 years ago in Philadelphia.

The Phillies should not preempt the Eagles though.

If the Eagles can be on 610 and 94.1, why not the Phillies on 1210 and 94.1? About 3/4 of their games are evening games. Can 1210 do better? I doubt it.

I'm really rooting for 975 the Fanatic to remain in business. I like the idea of two FM sports stations. I hope they get the Phils.

I also understand that there is NO PLANS for 94.1 to carry any of the Phillies post season. That should be the first sign to Phillies ownership to get in bed with the Fanatic.

They def should leave the Phils on 1210. With the move to be live/local during the day (except for Rush), they need the Phillies.

Which company has the rights to post-season ball this year? Westwood?

ESPN Radio. I don't know how this affects local team broadcasts, though.

97.5 can air the postseason Phillies games, but not the regular season games.

The MLB might want the Phillies on FM so that it will have a larger local audience, and there's no skywave so that non-local fans will have to pay for streaming instead of just listening to the night games on the radio.

ESPN pays for the playoffs on radio. 97.5 is an ESPN radio station. GM must pay ESPN money to carry ESPN radio. GM wants you to listen to the Phillies game on their station.
CBS pays for local Phillies broadcast and puts it on 1210. At least last year, the spots on 1210 were the same spots on ESPN radio. Really would be interesting for WIP-FM to simulcast 1210 during Phillies games and those who want to listen to WIP programming could still listen the old way on 610 WIP. That way, Phillies fans to listen to both the local broadcast and the national ESPN broadcast on FM.
I believe they started to let local radio in the postseason after 1993?

Sometime around then. Thank God so Harry had the chance to call a World Series. Interesting to note, only the flagship can use local announcers. And yes they have to run the ESPN commercials. If you are an affiliate, you get to run the ESPN broadcast which is better than having nothing at all.

I've wondered about the demographics of the Phillies fan who listens on the radio to the local broadcast throughout the year. And are the ones that listen on AM radio significantly older and male than the ones that might be listening to other MLB teams' team local broadcasts on FM?

Has the "product" of the local Phillies radio broadcast been diluted without Whitey and Harry? I think it has.

Should the Phillies care about WPHT's live and local presence? I don't know that the Phillies benefit from that on WPHT. Certainly WPHT appears to benefit.

I wonder if the Phillies radio network needs to include additional local stations in communities further from Philadelphia, as well as stations that are stronger than the current ones in Central PA, NEPA, and the South Jersey shore.

How much control do the Phillies really have (or want to have) over all of this?

Finally, when Family Radio finally gets 1210, will Harold Camping talk about the Phillies?

On September 24, 95.1 WZZO aired the Phillies game. That should be their full time affiliate in the Lehigh Valley as that signal is better than WSAN.

Don't stations have to bid to get to carry the Phillies games. So when the contract is up couldn't other stations both for flag ship and affiliates change depending on who out bids who.

That's what I'm getting at.

Is simply bidding the highest a good reason to have the games on a graveyard signal in a smaller city? Or do the Phillies profit more by taking a lower bid from another station who has a better signal or audience? Really, isn't it their choice?

In Harrisburg, for example, does 1400 AM cover the West Shore? No.

In northeast PA, is 630/1240 the best option?

What? ??? Don't understand this. He had a stroke and I don't believe is talking. Wouldn't CBS get rid of 610 1st?
