WPHT To Drop Rush For Obama On Thursday?

Michael Smerconish just announced that on Thursday afternoon, he will be doing a live interview on his midday show with President Obama as well as press secretary Robert Gibbs. WPHT, of course, carries the midday show on tape delay in late nights, but Smerconish said that some affiliates of the morning show would be "breaking format" and carrying the midday show on Thursday, or at least the portion where Smerconish will be talking to Obama.

You'd have to wonder if WPHT would be among the stations that carry the morning show to "break format", being his flagship station, and all. How ironic would it be if WPHT pre-empted Rush Limbaugh for an interview with Obama?

1210 AM to air it live"
Michael Smerconish Interviews President Barack Obama

Philadelphia, Wednesday, August 19, 2009 – Michael Smerconish, 1210 AM, WPHT morning host, will conduct a one-on-one interview with President Barack Obama from the White House on Thursday, August 20, 2009. The interview will air live at approximately 1:10pm on The Big Talker 1210 AM WPHT and www.thebigtalker1210.com. Continuing the tradition of bringing the Nation’s top newsmakers directly to his listeners, Michael will use this opportunity to ask the President about his Health Care Initiative and other issues.

“I am proud and excited to be the first radio broadcaster on the watch of this President to be invited into the White House to interview the President of the United States and include telephone calls from my listeners, ” said Michael Smerconish. “There are no ground rules. I am not prescreening with the White House on what the subject matter will be. I run my radio program with dignity and respect for this president and other public officials. I do not intend to take calls from listeners who want to offer platitudes, nor take cheap shots against the President. I used the last portion of today’s program to seek out listeners with pointed direct and substantive questions about Health Care. We’re looking for questions that have not already been asked.”

The Michael Smerconish Show airs weekday mornings 5 AM to 9 AM and weekday evenings 12 midnight to 2 AM on The Big Talker 1210, WPHT.

Well for those Philly listeners, who'd rather hear Rush, I guess they can tune into 1450 WILM in Wilmington or 770 WABC in NYC, or WHP Harrisburg.

I believe Michael also said that there will also be a visual feed on MSNBC during the 1 PM hour.

Right now, he's doing a segment on his show about how offended he is about media outlets reporting that the President will be interviewed by a "conservative" host today.

I can't believe they're going to preempt Rush for the phony bald-headed jacka**. I guess I'll be listening online to WABC to Rush. Preimere and Clear Channel should start to look around Philly for another station to carry Rush & Sean. 1210 also carries too many day Phillies games that should be carried on 610.

I can go one better: Have CC yank rights of the 9 AM-6 PM shwos from CBS, then blow up a failing FM in Philly and turn it into an FM talker.

ANd what does a person's lack of hair have to do with....anything? It doesn't exactly make your arguments sound compelling. It makes you sound like a kindergartener.

Jealousy. Envy. "Gee, I can do better than him," and all that crap, probably. "Big hat, no cattle" as Dan Rather would say.

I was wrong about Michael's lack of hair. He actually shaves his head. I used to be a fan of his years ago but, probably 2-3 NJ Gov election cycles ago, Michael on the afternoons, didn't seem to realize that part of his listening audience was East of the Delaware River was electing a new gov. and he chose not to talk about it. I was flippening around and found this local talk show host from WABC in NYC talking about the NJ gov race. It turned out that it was Sean Hannity. He was a local NYC host still. When he was syndicated and not carried in Philly but he was on Sirius, I got satellite radio so that I didn't have to listen to the static from WABC.

When he chose to endorse the current president, that really turned me off. I guess I'm not mad at Michael but, CBS's decision to take Rush off and give the president more time on the radio when there are plenty of other options to listen to other stuff. Why couldn't this interview be carried on WHYY-FM or even KYW-AM could have carried it and I could have listened to Rush.

KYW carrying the interview sounds like a good idea, especially since it was basically "breaking news" as the interview was simulcast on MSNBC, and even CNN. However, with WPHT being Smerconish's flagship, I guess there was no way around pre-empting Rush for this interview. I guess it's no different than WPHT airing a Phillies day game.

Which still doesn't answer the question. He shaves his head, or he chooses to accept that sometimes nature takes it away. Again, why does that matter in the least either way? Disagreeing with his views, his hosting style, etc., sure, but what's the relevance of hair?

he is a turncoat and a shaved baldie. He is not a conservative he is a flamming liberal and the proof is that he backed Nobama who will end up being the most far left president we ever had. I think he started to show his true (liberal) colors when MSNBC showed interest. And we all know how far left MSNBC is.

Remember Smerconich supported Ed Rendell in the 90's. And Rendell *****.

FYI WPHT-AM aired the interview live.

That's been discussed for a long time, but CC doesn't really have an FM it would be willing to blow up in Philly right now.

FM talk was very successful in Philly on WWDB. No reason it couldn't happen again. But it would need the right shows to make it work.

Premiere has had a long and profitable relationship with WPHT. I can't imagine this will hurt it very much.

I'd personally love to see the old WCAU call letters return some day. But that's just me.

You know what, we know that. The discussion is that WPHT pulled Rush to do it! What would have KYW needed to do, pull traffic on the 2s?
