WPIK FM off the air.

I hear WPIK was off the air. Has the CP for 96.7 signed on. 1500AM is now talk, WWWK 97.7 is now 100K and reaches all of the lower and middle keys, and other Key's news. Thanks

Just having returned from the Keys, WPIK is on the air but at low power or using another antenna. Their signal on the car radio in Marathon is not good enough to cover it.

WWWK is now 105.5 with COL of Islamorada. 97.7 was WAVK and was running parallel with 98.7 WCNK Key West, but they were off the air again when I was there. I assume that the WCNK/WWUS people just purchased it?

As with WPIK, 92.7 WEOW/99.5 WAIL/107.9 WMFM have the same issue.

96.7 is not on yet. There are 2 Cuban FMs on 96.7 that can be heard in the Keys: R Reloj in Santa Clara & R Rebelde in Havana (with RDS to boot!)

1500am is KONK there, right? Does anyone listen that station?

I like the idea of a talk station that is not crippled with national syndicated hosts. Don't know if anyone would pay attention to it though.

Hmm same applicant at 96.7 station went from a class C to class A and changed frequency. Look like will be on the air in a few days.

You think someone at the FCC didn't realize 96.7 was a Havana signal? I know we're not big fans of Cuba, but I think FCC has to recognize Cuban signals that are that close. I think that would explain the move...

I can tell you firsthand that 96.7's signal is iffy in the Keys, at best. I only get it because I try for it and have decent DX equipment.

Havana used to use 98.7 for R Ciudad de la Habana. They use 94.9 now. Key West has used 98.7 for about 15 years now with a 100kW signal. They were briefly off the air for a couple of months in 1996, maybe between owners.....I caught the Havana 98.7 from Geiger Key near Key West, very faintly, running parallel Havana's AM 820. So they did co-exist.

What's interesting is that 96.7, formerly a Class-A-only frequency, has NO stations in FL at all...nowhere in this big state, except for translators & LPFMs! Because of this, 96.7 remains the only decent Cuban FM "beacon". 96.7 is not the strongest signal from the Keys, and I can hear other Cubans from the Keys, but for the most part, I have to brush off US co-channels.

As I make my way down the Keys, 99.9 seems to be the strongest one, but WKIS gives it a fight a lot of the way.
