WPKO: Mix 983

I heard them on my way from Dayton to Athens.... took 75 to 71 to 70 and heard a WPKO, Mix 98.3 who I thought was Hot AC at first, but then heard them play Taio Cruz & Ke$ha, Eminem, Drake - they had some Rob Thomas and Thriving Ivory in there as well, but it sounds more CHR. I wish they streamed... what's the deal with this station?

another small town station that's the everything station...listen in the afternoon and it plays oldies. most small town station that are hot ac will play chr tunes now

This station has been around for a while. It started out in 1969 as WOGM (Ohio's Good Music) the FM sister of the original WOHP (later WTOO-AM,WTCY and currently WBLL). It has seen several owners over the decades and is still located off of U.S. 33 on State Route 540 (east Sandusky Avenue)...and yes it is located on Ohio's Highest Point...the callsign meaning of the original WOHP. If you were a little kid watching Uncle Orrie (Joe Rockhold) on WHIO-TV in the 60s,this is where he started his carrer a decade earlier. It was also a breif stop for the late Gordy Price before moving on to T-102 up in Lima...he worked here two times in the early and mid 80s.

(no live streaming...but features many audioclips)

They've always sounded like a good small-town station to me. Heard some of their AC format the other night driving from Columbus to St. Marys; the thing I really liked was the DJ on the night shift was local and possibly live! I've liked this station ever since I first heard it in the early 90s. Has a nice reach into western Ohio, presumably because of its altitude, and the signal isn't as robust to the east toward Columbus.

ya it was live. his name is matt smith?

Their night guy *was* Ken Keller.. Not sure if he is still there or not as I have lived out of state for a few years now. During the day the station was Hot AC bordering on soft AC sometimes.. They always did their 'Nite Mix' in the evening which is when they had more of a CHR feel. Not bad for a small town station. I do remember that they never updated their imaging the decade or so I was able to listen to them.

For being a LPFM, they do pretty well. I live just outside Logan county and listen often. I've even heard country on there before, although it's only done by request. And yes, Ken Keller has been there a while. And I would assume he is live and local. I've called in and made a few requests. He also does the DJ service that they offer as well. Good, local station.

Actuallly 1300 watts makes WPKO a full-powered FM not an LPFM but being on the hightest point ...it helps the signal.
(Weren't they 3,000 watts when it was still WTOO-FM?)

Logan County does have an LPFM. WRPO at 93.5 at Indian Lake...been there since 2002. Started out as adult standards, later smooth jazz, now oldies since 2009.

The other one though not considered an LPFM is class A (100 watt) WDEQ currently at 91.7 at Riverside High School. Last time I tried to tune in they were silent as of a year ago.
