WPLJ Morning Changes

The station moved its morning show, Todd and Jayde, to the hours of 5:30-8:30 AM.
This is now followed by about 1 3/4 hours of commercial free music. Apparently there are no DJ's between 8:30 and 10 AM.
It seems unusual for a large FM music station to have their morning personalities do a show that is only 3 hours long, and then go automated for about 1 1/2 hours. Perhaps management believes continuous music with few interruptions at the beginning of the workday will attract office listening.

Typically, it removes the two main things people dislike most about radio: Chatty DJs and too many commercials.

It seems that every couple of months, PLJ undergoes changes. Their ratings are not the best in recent years, at least they try to do some tricks to keep them afloat. There's their competitor 102.7, which also underwent a change last year when they switched from "Fresh" to NEW. They play mostly newer music than 95.5

PLJ mixes 80's-90's stuff with currents, thus making the station an "unconventional" Hot AC.

Also interesting fact is that they use old sounding imaging from almost 30 years ago! Others stations I hear that play similar music use modern sounding imaging. I guess that the listeners prefer the old 'PLJ from their heyday.

In any case, PLJ isn't going anywhere anytime soon, regardless of how bad they perform in the Nielsen ratings.

It's actually the perfect move. Most people are out of their cars and in the office by 8:30-ish. This will really help in-office listening, especially with their format. They'll definitely need to run more commercials in other hours to make up for those they lost, but if they play their cards right, ratings will go up and rates likely to follow.

Actually, I'm a bit familiar of how PLJ sounded like. The jingles they are using now were from the early 90's during the Scott Shannon era, but slightly updated. Although this may sound very outdated and does not match with the music they are playing now, I guess they wanted to make the station sound familiar to listeners who prefer the old 'PLJ.

In addition, they play more '80s and '90s music than most other Hot AC stations in the country. So, yes, I would classify it as an "unconventional" Hot AC.
