WPLJ sports report

The morning after the NJ Devils' Martin Brodeur netted his 552nd career victory, NHL's all-time record, it was nowhere to be heard on PLJ's morning newscast. The entire sports report went
"Rangers beat the Canadiens 4-3, Devils over the Blackhawks 3-2."
Excuse me, but had a Yankees pitcher reached a milestone (500th win) it certainly would have been part of that report. Why then was it more newsworthy to report the Devils "win" rather than Brodeur's all-time record?

While it's inexcusable to miss a huge milestone such as the most wins ever by an NHL goalie, and even more so when it's a local team, I think you're holding PLJ up to too high of a standard. I haven't been in the NY area for a while, but last I checked they were something of a Hot AC or something like that. Whatever they are, I believe their target is adult females, who, let's face it, aren't really that into sports, in general. And, quite honestly, some of their jocks probably aren't that into sports.

It's a mistake, it should have been mentioned, but the target audience is more preoccupied with hearing one of Todd's Phone Scams or the next Nickleback song.

So why even bother with a sports report? If the target audience is not into sports, then you're just wasting their time. However, if you are going to have a sports report (even a quick one), then for crying out loud do it right. Let's not make empty excuses for a glaring oversight on the part of WPLJ. MORE RADIO TRUTH is right to call them out...they completely missed the boat on this one.

Granted this news may not have been highly emphasized in the morning show's sports report but in defense of Scott, Todd, Patty and Joe Nolan they did speak about Brodeur's 552nd career victory in the 7:00 and 8:00 hour. After that I don't know if it was mentioned again. Joe Nolan went to the game and gave all the details and the games highlights on the Big Show and Brodeur was praised and congratulated by all of them on air.

Maybe so...but that's just another reason why it SHOULD have been included in the sports report. That was THE sports headline of the morning. How do you leave that out of your sports report? Especially in light of the fact that your morning team was talking about it.

Hey, calm down. I wasn't making empty excuses. I started off my reply with "while it's inexcusable...". I was answering the question he asked which was "why?"

It could have simply been just a really big mistake, or it could have been decided that the audience didn't care. I'm leaning towards mistake since a previous poster said it was talked about ad infinitum in 7-8am.

Hi Scott, the empty excuses comment was not directed at you personally and I realize you were just trying to offer a reasonable explanation as to how PLJ might have allowed this goof to happen. Believe me I am calm and I certainly didn't mean to sound like I was jumping down your throat. It's just frustrating to see people in the #1 radio market in the country who are supposed to be the best of the best and yet they don't know how to do their job.

It was put on the New Jersey Board because it related to the report on a NJ team (the Devils).
Had it been a question concerning their omitting a NY team (Yanks-Mets-Rangers-Knicks...) it had been up on the NYC Board.

No worries, and I totally agree. #1 market, no excuse.

As for why they're on this board, the first answer by More Radio Truth is definitely one reason, but let's not forget, a 50,000 watt station broadcasting from Manhattan will broadcast into much of NJ. That's one of the problems with being in the Monmouth/Ocean market. Much of Monmouth County is listening to NY stations. Just like a Philly station broadcasts in South Jersey's Cumberland, Gloucester, Camden, Salem and Burlington Counties. So, if the poster was a listener, this is his board. Add that to the Devils and here we are.
