WPLJ & WABC Will Apparently Be Streamed on IHeartRadio

Various articles state that Clear Channel's IHeartRadio will be adding the streams of the 570 Cumulus stations. Presumably this will include their stations in New York- WPLJ and WABC.
This deal between CC and Cumulus should extend the availability of the latter's stations. It will also add many additional choices to IHeartRadio, Clear Channel's rapidly growing platform for the streams of all their stations, and numerous others.
As online radio listening migrates to car dashboards, a few major destinations such as IHeartRadio and Pandora could grab a significant portion of people listening online, while on the road.

Given the quality of the I Heart Radio audio, that is great news.

The problem is that it requires three apps to listen to all stations (CBS's Radio.com, CC's iHeartRadio, and TunedIn), plus another app for Pandora. Not easy to shut one down, start another up, and then select the desired station. Don't do that while driving! And that probably won't change anytime soon, since CBS and CC won't allow it.

A previous poster refers to "quality of iHeartRadio audio" which is powered by Akamai (something I know one poster here who is prone to pulling stream URL's is quite familiar with ;) ). With this deal, will another streaming provider take over?

Add Radio Pup to the list if you want the Townsquare stations. Anyone? Hello?

So another big coup for Clear Channel, right after Univision, EMF and WNYC. I wonder if this means Cumulus will pull their stations off apps like TuneIn like Clear Channel and CBS did.

The multiple apps are a bit of a pain, but I have often said nice things about IHeart. Very stable app, good layout and the stations sound really good. It can get a bit sluggish at times with scrolling, but I like it (though the CC stations are a bit bland). Also has a scan feature, so if you don't like the 'oldies' station currently playing, you can find another one that sounds exactly like it (probably the same jocks too!). They do add some extra non-radio channels (even one with classical music!), so that helps. As for the custom thing, I still think Pandora does a better job with some artists.

The CBS app, on the other hand, is just awful. Great content, lousy app.

I hope it increase the audio quality of the Cumulus streams. PLJ is sounding awfull at the moment. When are the stations available with Iheartradio?

I believe Clear Channel is smart to be pursuing online radio aggressively with its IHeartRadio platform.
They are making it available on a wide variety of devices and operating systems. It has a huge assortment of stations which keeps growing. There are also many music channels that have been commercial free. A large portion of them have personalities. And IHeartRadio is being heavily promoted.
All this could make CC a formidable player in online entertainment going forward, especially if high royalty fees and other issues shake out a lot of the smaller operators.
The post above by Fighting Irish has good things to say about the IHeart Radio software, but asserts that CC stations tend to be bland compared with those of competitor CBS Radio. I do not think that is true. Perhaps he could elaborate on that opinion.

My only gripe with iHeartRadio is that in order to save stations as "favorites," you need to log in with Facebook. Luckily, the favorites that I saved before I updated to the newest version were intact; I just can't save new ones. And that's why I'll be hesitant to update the app for the foreseeable future. Even if it means I can listen to Joe Crummey on my iPhone. Sorry.

I haven't had any real problem switching between streaming apps on my iPhone. The biggest issue there is that some apps (TuneIn seems to be the biggest offender) will still run despite not playing audio. That can mean for a quickly drained battery. Switching between two stations on the same app is far more difficult to me since you have to go through a menu all over again and make multiple clicks/touches on a smaller space. I do agree that it's not a good idea to do when driving, especially if you're driving in stop and go traffic in the city or heavy traffic on the expressway. However, as streaming apps find their way into dashboards, tuning between them will become easier, maybe as easy as pushing a radio button.

Not likely. A mobile streaming app can use multiple providers pretty easily. iHeartRadio can already point to multiple URL's, which is how you can hear all of those stations. So, it's not much more difficult to point to a completely different provider. It's just a matter of a little more typing in the code behind the scenes. I'd expect both Clear Channel and Cumulus to keep the same providers, though it's not out of the question that Cumulus might want to outsource streaming, especially if they get a better deal through buying in bulk and/or sharing the costs with Clear Channel.

I'd say this is quite likely. Of course, they'd just be pulled off the TuneIn mobile app. If you use TuneIn on your desktop, the Cumulus stations would just make the iHeartRadio player pop-up.

The CBS app, on the other hand, is just awful. Great content, lousy app.

Depends on your phone. Works just fine on my iPhone, but it's a disaster on Android! iHeartRadio is about the only streaming app that works across every version of Android.

The press release I saw this afternoon indicated the Cumulus stations were expected to be on iHeartRadio by the end of the first quarter of next year. Of course, the press release indicating Univision stations would stream on iHeartRadio said they'd be on by the end of this year, but there's no sign of them yet. Granted, they still have a few weeks, but almost three months later, they're not there. In other words, the press release likely provided the most optimistic guess.

Mmm, that still takes a while. Why is that? Because the streaming provider remain the same. Cummulus are using streamtheworld.com and CC Akamai.

Curious, anyone drive around NYC suburbs streaming iheartradio from their cell phone? I wonder how close are we getting to comparable network coverage and FM reception. I suspect Verizon 3g can come close but I have not tried it.

I love the iheartradio selections and spend most of my time listening to other markets since NYC radio sucks. So I am considering giving this a shot.

It's very easy on ANDROID phones. Fairly easy on Iphone. If you save favorites on either it's really not a problem.

ooTunes streams every station. Clear Channel, CBS, Townsquare, and all others, and every independent station.

I just hope they don't take these off TuneIn. It's the only service that lets you record! A needed feature once they get their PC recording program back in operation :)

Now if only PLJ could get their stream side in order. Today we heard a commercial aired during a traffic report ;o)..

I don't know if it's the case with 'PLJ, but I've been told that, in some cases, contracts with an outsourced traffic provider prohibit streaming that material.

Keep in mind, that was only an estimate. K-Love and Air1 got on iHeartRadio in a few weeks. So, it might take awhile for the Cumulus stations to reach iHeartRadio, or it might not.

I don't know why they didn't estimate it to be sooner. I suspect, though, that part of the issue will be getting the Cumulus stations on a single platform. Not all Cumulus stations use StreamTheWorld. Only the ex-Citadel stations do; the stations that were already with Cumulus were handled in-house. My understanding is that Cumulus would like to move the ex-Citadel stations in-house, too. Whether Cumulus moves everything in-house or outsources everything, I expect they'll move everything to one provider. That will probably take longer than putting the Cumulus stations on iHeartRadio.

This would be awesome if CBS/Cumulus doesn't uphold their international stream block. CC is known to do that too on web-based streams, but with the iHeartRadio app, I can listen to every CC station in Europe. ooTunes is a GREAT app, but for the time being, they haven't found a way to work around the CBS/Cumulus stream block to Europe...

Hmm, weird.... Didn't know that.

I just think it's random commercial placement. S and T did a promotional announcment today, and all of a sudden it was interupted by a sleepy's commercial that ran into the
start of the traffic report.. just highly annoying :)

I just bought a Internet Radio for my kitchen. Of the thousands of stations on it I could not find any CC stations. So in my house clear channel does not exist.
I think the walled garden idea will backfire.
Stu

These random commercials on PLJ are getting more annoying. have a feeling your post about traffic is right. Even though it was a rather short
commercial, we didn't hear joe nolan's report online at the 6:40 or so mark on the net stream. They ran the south park mormon play commercial
instead... It really is a jarring experience for the listener..
