WABC-FM ("95 and a half FM") morphed to WPLJ ("Rock 'N Stereo, 95.5") on February 14, 1971. It was probably the most popular FM rock station in New York throughout the 1970's. And yes, the call-letters WPLJ stood (and still do) for "White Port and Lemon Juice".

WABC-FM ("95 and a half FM") morphed to WPLJ ("Rock 'N Stereo, 95.5") on February 14, 1971. It was probably the most popular FM rock station in New York throughout the 1970's. And yes, the call-letters WPLJ stood (and still do) for "White Port and Lemon Juice".

And as a side note, all of ABC's owned and operated FM stations got brand new call-letters and all went to Progressive Rock in the 1971-1972 period. All have special meanings in their call-letters.....


WABC-FM/95.5 New York, became WPLJ ("White Port & Lemon Juice")
WLS-FM/94.7 Chicago, became WDAI ("Detroit's Automotive Industry", intended for WXYZ-FM Detroit)
WXYZ-FM/101.1 Detroit, became WRIF (as in a guitar "RIFF", intended for WLS-FM Chicago)
KABC-FM/95.5 Los Angeles, became KLOS (as in LOS Angeles, CA)
KGO-FM/103.7 San Francisco, became KSFX (the San Francisco eXperience)
KQV-FM/102.5 Pittsburgh, became WDVE-FM (this set of call-letters have a meaning that escapes me)

ABC Corporate applied for the call-letters all at once. As a result, the intended call-letters for the Chicago and Detroit FM'ers were inadvertently switched by accident by the FCC and ABC. However, the call-letters struck a chord to the audience almost immediately so they were left as is.

didn't WPLJ flip to WWPR--Power 95 for a year or two? when was that? it's amazing they were able to reclaim the WPLJ call letters.

Thanks Lino--- very helpful. I see 95.5 was WWPR for only one year. how long were they MOJO Radio? I don't recall that at all. was that 1989 into the early 90's?

I don't have exact dates but I recall scott shennon left WHTZ in 1989, went to LA for a year got his tail wupped trying something called "Pirate radio" -yeah, right a licensed station calling itself pirate. After a year he returned to NYC I seem to recall this being fall 1990 when he statrted "Mojo". That one was awful, idiotic imaging and a playlist that was approx 40% rap!

Next I heard was in spring 1992 the station was touting the "no rap-no hard stuff" liner. Oh, and the processing was a return to the Shannon Mush -plenty of IM distortion and grunge (in the audio not the music). They were also probably the last NY station still using carts for music 'till maybe 6 years ago. Their website photos still show a wall of carts, tradition I guess.

The audio is alittle better but the programming is about as it has been for 15 years.

I would have to disagree with your statement that Scott Shannon got wupped in L.A. Actually he and Pirate Radio was rising rather quickly to a top five station. It is just that Westwood One ran into money problems had to unload their radio properties. Even though Pirate (KQLZ) was their only top rated station, it was involved in the deal. When the new owners took over, that was the beginning of the end for Pirate Radio.
