WPLR launching Alt. Rock format on 102.3 translator on Monday

It's known as MOD (as in Modern Rock) 102.3

What do you think Modern Rock 104.1/WMRQ thinks of this?

I used to work there when it was Merv Griffin's Magic104 in the late '70's - early '80's

Do you think 102.3 will take a bite out of 104.1's audience in New Haven?

This knocks "Big D" (oldies) off WPLR-HD2. It's still on the HD2 of WDRC-FM Hartford. Do you suppose Mod might replace Big D there as well? With Mod being available via 'PLR's HD2 as well as a translator and the internet, it seems that Connoisseur is giving the alternative rock format a push that the oldies format hasn't received. Will that push extend to the Hartford market?

I've been listening in the car on HD2 and at home on the stream.

Both the music and audio quality are good. Marketing: Their website and Twitter video are pleasing to the eye, and shows what the station can do if it spends money on marketing. My question: Can MOD 102.3 succeed on a translator and HD2, or is their target demographic audience listening to radio mostly on the phone and internet?

WMRQ programs a very similar format and gets peanuts for ratings.

I have no idea why the area needs a second station playing such music. Stupid move.

What other format would you suggest? Keep in mind that this is a translator and that all the money-making formats -- CHR, AC, hit country, classic rock, urban -- are present in the market already. Oldies? Classic country? Might as well stick with alternative and at least have no appreciable 55+ listenership to repulse potential advertisers.

How well does BOMBA 104.5 from Bridgeport make it into New Haven? If it doesn't Spanish Tropical is the answer.

Bomba is not "tropical". It's Rhythmic CHR. There may be an occasional salsa or merengue song, but only if they are CHR hits.

Just to verify, I listened a moment ago and confirmed the music blend and, in addition, had to listen to about the worst DJ I have heard in the last decade.

Try WPRX New Britain. That's the station that's operating with no license (since July!) while ownership tries to scrape up a payment. Like Bomba, it's a real throwback to the bad old days of Spanish-language radio -- echo chambers, frequent mentions of "exitos," obnoxious sound effects. I don't understand much Spanish, but I think I know what good radio sounds like. Hartford's Spanish-language stations are embarrassing, especially when you compare them to WSKQ New York which starts to overpower WUCS Windsor Locks about 10 miles north of New Haven.

Mod 102.3 is already kaput. Gee, that didn't take long.

Sure would be nice if one of the rock stations in the state could play music made after 1993. How many Classic Rock stations does the Hartford area need??? Good grief.

The format continues on 99.1 HD2, if you're one of the few who've bought a radio.

Even if 102.9 FM goes Spanish, they'll still overrun the Kia of East Hartford spots with the Trump impersonator. 104.1 is nearly as bad with it.

102.9 won't be going Spanish, but you're right even if they did they would still run those horrible commercials. I'm a regular listener to BOMBA and they run the ads in English. And the ones for Jill Merriam from Key Hyundai as well. Not counting Spanish stations La Mega 101.7 (910) and Viva 107.3/840, I think Full Power Radio's KOOL Radio is the only Hartford station that doesn't run the Kia of East Hartford spots.
