WPLR morning show

Tralfaz:

Exactly what do you consider a "real job"? Whatever YOU do for a living????

Great subject.. Strangely enough, I posted my Webmaster's Corner piece at my website on just this subject, citing WPLR and the boring repetition that's driving me out of my mind. It's on all the time at work, because in the shop, the only two stations one can pick up are the mindless dribblets making noise on unlistenable KC-101, and the boredom factor on Connecticut's Number 1 Rock Station, PLR... with 50 minutes of music each hour.

So, here's an exerpt from my occasionally read literature...

...We’ve known that CHR stations have been taking a big hit, now the rock format is in serious trouble. I say this because of a number of things: First, a listen to the average “Classic Rock” station has convinced me that the ’safe music’ approach that’s been in use for decades in AC, Oldies and Country formats has increasingly taken hold in the Classic Rock format. The format is now so stale its almost unlistenable. For instance, 99.1 WPLR New Haven has such a limited playlist, that one can hear Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody”, “Fat Bottom Girls” and “We Will Rock You/We Are the Champions” EVERY day, the only separation is in which daypart it plays. The same thing with Pink Floyd, The Who, and many other so called ‘mainstream’ Rock artists of the 70s and early 80s. There were thousands of great songs in the AOR format over the years, and yet most stations have reduced the playlists to only a couple hundred (maybe) songs in a 15 year period. Its KILLING the format! Furthermore, the format has become like every other non-CHR station, with jocks reading the same slogan every break. The boredom factor is so large a factor, one has to wonder how long the Classic Rock format will stick around.

Now, perhaps I'm a bit melodramatic, but really, the same songs play every damn day. The playlist can't be more than 200 songs at best. LIkewise, the jock patter in EVERY break goes this way... "99-1 PLR, Connecticut's (pause) number 1 (pause) Rock Station, 50 minutes of music every hour. The forecast from NewsChannel 8...." And that's EVERY break! Please, SAY something that doesn't sound like a typical book-end.

I run a classic radio site and I can tell you unequivically, no matter WHAT the music they, or any station plays, there'd better be a longer rotation of songs people remember from their high school days, and the jocks damn well better say something interesting, relevant, or very funny, if the stations are to survive. 99-1 PLR sucks. It sucks because of it's sameness and 'safe music' policy. And as long as the dopes who run PLR continue this way, this station will continue to suck.

All CT radio stations are totally unlistenable! KC/AVZ and ELI should collectively be blown off the dial. Level that building and tear down those towers on Benham St in Hamden. Build an Amusement park or another Golf Course. Better yet housing for homeless people. ;D

PLR is probably the worst programmed rock station on the planet. Same tunes and the same stale jock drivel. ::)
That station needs an enema. You have to love the bs line of 50 minutes of rock every hour. More like 50 minutes of the same old rock tunes every hour.

Simple solution to CT listeners. Stop listening. Pop a CD in and be done with it! ;D

Blame the corporate stuffed shirts , they hamstring all the jocks. For the love of God they fired Eddy Sab because the morning show wasn't playing the minimum 4 songs an hour and he was letting them get way with it.

As far as the main 3 jocks(Landry, Lappy, and Prodoti) they all know the listeners are sick of the same old liners and the whole CT's number 1 rock station.....repeated over and over. They all have been in the business long enough to know that it's boring as hell. They are all just happy to be employed at this juncture.

As far as the catalog of songs, PLR has just over 300 songs available. They don't utilize them all because they don't all test well. thats why you don't hear artists like SRV any more. He doesn't test well and that's just COX radio BS. If it were left up to the current music director the song mix would be much different and not so repetitious.

Lets face it the corporate mindset is just too cocky and refuses to listen to any type of logic. Look no farther than AIG and those bonuses, they looked the govt and the tax payers right in the eye, took the money said there thank you and gave them the big FU.

Eventually the stale radio at PLR is going to end. And probably badly for people working there. They haven't changed their programming style in a while. It's starting to show up in the Arb numbers. YBC and couple of other stations are creeping up in numbers. But hey, they are all owned by Cox. So everybody wins! For now. The New Haven county rocker isn't a loyal listener of PLR anymore. ;D

Hopefully the new PD will bring some change to PLR. Part of the problem in my opinion is that in the classic rock category, PLR hasn't been pushed by other stations. I95 doesn't have as strong a signal, 95.9 the fox is a train wreck, and WBAB on long island is just pathetic and just mismanaged(and yes I understand that the fox and BAB are both owned by Cox). As far as YBC yes it ratings have grown but that doesn't really hurt PLR

As far as people losing their jobs, I think they will keep the main people meaning Landry and Lappy. Not sure about Prodoti and the over night guy. The morning crew just re-upped for another 2 years sadly. Maybe it's just me but I just don't find anything they do to be funny.

If Cox really wants to save money, they'd start syndicating Bubba the Love Sponge northward. Last year, when he started his new terrestrial show on rock stations in Tampa and Jacksonville, I knew that Cox would eventually expand it to more of their stations in the long run. Granted, they just added Orlando and a couple of others, but perhaps they're waiting just a little more to see if Bubba can appeal to listeners outside of the Southwest.

In addition to the morning show on WPLR, as you mentioned, I've come to find out that Roger & JP, morning mainstays at WBAB on Long Island, have also re-upped for a couple of years. Local radio is crucial to survival, but understandably, and sadly, sometimes the bottom line (i.e. cheaper-to-run syndication) has to be met. It probably wouldn't surprise me if Bubba showed up on WPLR and/or WBAB (provided he isn't in trouble with the FCC again ;D ) in the near future.

We already had Bubba here in the last days of Radio 104 in 2002-03. What makes you say that his show would succeed here now?

Chaz & AJ are probably pulling down between $75k-90k each. Do you think PLR would ever voice track that morning show? Cox would have to force the issue.

If those 2 unfunny numbheads make more than 150k combined then Cox management collectively are INSANE IN THE MEMBRANE! These guys should have been blown years ago!
But in this crippling economy that will only last for so long and then they will be shown the door. ;D

I can't speak to this new contract but the last one I can tell you that one of them was making more than 150k and with his ego he would never take less this time around.

Even their agents (if they have one???) won't be able to save their hind ends. Once a directive comes up from Cox in Atlanta telling the PD to start searching for a new morning show, they will be toast. The PD can hire one person to do that show at half the money those two no talent goons are making.
PLR's numbers in their target demo's have been on the decline for years. Spring is here and it's time for a change!

[EDIT] LMAO But now it's time to get BLOWN OUT! ::) ::)

[EDIT-offensive content]

I sense a lot of jealousy here..... do you guys think that you can do better ? Are you even employed in radio at all, or is it that you THINK you know better. I have to laugh when you say that someone from down south should be simulcasted up here. I know that I would not even bother to listen to some redneck hillbilly with the moniker "Love Sponge". The image that conjurs alone gives me the chills........ Obviously Chaz & AJ are doing something right.... They entertain people..... You must not be listening to say otherwise. Let me guess...you work at some convenience store somewhere and have nothing better to do than post on a radio message board pretending like you could do better...PLEASE...get a life..... or better yet, go spew your jealous rants somewhere else....... Just my opinion
