WPOP Top Forty 50th Anniversary

A few of us WPOP alumni have been researching over the last year or so as to when WPOP made the switch from an MOR/Network affiliate to a full-time Top Forty format.

We can't arrive at an exact date but most of the research points to some time in 1958. There were some rock n' roll shows on the station before then, but that was more like block programming than a full-time dedicated RnR format. Early in 1958 they were also still carrying 15-30 minutes blocks of network stuff and some 2-3 hour blocks of MOR and standards. It was later that year that the switch occurred.

2008 marks the 50th anniversary of that historic flip. We're trying to get a reunion in the works for some time this summer. We have a lot of contacts for WPOP alumni but some are still lost. If you know of anyone who worked at WPOP in ANY capacity over the last 50 years (DJs, news, sales, engineers, traffic, secretarial, receptionists...etc) please have them contact me at...

or just post some replies to this thread.

Thanks

Mike Adams, who's on WEEI at night, worked there in the 70s as Dale Denver. Occasionally when he's fooling around on his show, he'll talk up a song and say POP at the end.

Just a suggestion but if you try this website, it might answer "some" of your questions about WPOP.

I do know that there was a casual reunion of sorts for some of the WPOP jocks in June, 2005. There might be some pictures from that event on this site.

Many thanks to Ed Brouder for this wonderful contribution to radio.
