WPOW/Miami HD-2 Becomes Dance

Miami's WPOW Launches HD Dance Station
July 26, 2005
By Ken Tucker, Billboard Radio Monitor

WPOW-FM, Beasley Broadcast Group’s Rhythmic Top 40 station in Miami is the latest station—and the first in Miami—to utilize HD Radio multicast technology to add a second station to its programming offerings.

HD-2 is Power’s new sister dance music station and will feature music from Tiesto, Juliet, Deep Dish, Chemical Brothers and 4 Strings, among others. The channel will also include dance remixes of top 40 records.

“There has always been insatiable demand in Miami for pure dance music,” said Ira Wolf, (a.k.a. Tony the Tiger), interim program director for WPOW, in a release.

“Power 96 has always been on the cutting edge musically, and now we are broadcasting the first multicast HD Radio station airing in the Miami-Fort Lauderdale area, propelling us to the vanguard of this exciting new era in radio,” added Greg Reed, vp and general manager for WPOW.

The commercial-free, subscription-free, all music channel is being programmed by Power and Italian company Radio 105 Network.

In May, Infinity Broadcasting became the first commercial broadcaster to launch an HD multicast station on WUSN-FM, its Country station in Chicago, followed by its sister station WJMK-FM in the market. The other broadcaster to jump on board the multicast trend is Capitol Broadcasting’s WRAL-FM in Raleigh, N.C.

Are new cars being installed with HD radio just as with XM and Sirius? How many people can currently receive such broadcasts? Any estimates?

Nope.

Commendable, but....

Could someone please tell the webmaster at the Power 96 website that the cartoon rendition of the tower, on the building in Downtown Miami (One Biscayne building) they so proudly display on the front page of their website is actually the tower for WXDJ (El Zol 95.7) (and was actually the old tower for WINZ-FM "I-95", now Mega and WHQT "Hot 105" in the 80s), and that if they'd like to more accurately reflect history, they should put up a drawing of the Gannett Tower in North Dade, which is the real WPOW tower??

Yeah, I know, not much to Gannett other than a tower, but...c'mon.

They reaaaaaaaaaally need to get rid of that flash splash page. After checking out their site for the first time the other day, I had no idea that their site had as much info after the splash page.
______________

Re: Commendable, but....

They are just showing some of the buildings downtown. One Biscayne currently has 92.3 and 95.7 and used to have 93.9, 94,9, 105.1, 100 North Biscayne had 93.1 with a MUCH weaker signal. 93.1, 93.9, 94.9 could not move north because of 93.5 in Belle Glade and 94.3 in WPB and 105.1 was stuck there untill WEAT went from 104.5 to 104.3. 92.3 protects 92.1 in WPB and 95.7 protects 95.5 in Martin or St Lucie County. Gannett curently houses 93.1, 93.9, 94.9, 96.5, 97.3, 99.1, 100.7, 102.7, 103.5, 105.1, 107.5 (all into the same antenna), as well as TV channels 33, 48(LP), 69, and I think 51 might be there.
______________

OK...question....they couldn't move north to where?? So how did they ultimately move to where they are now?? Did they work out a deal with Riviera Beach and Belle Glade, or is the current site at just the right location where there is no issue with said PB stations?

Also, you mentioned 105.1...You wouldn't happen to know where the old grandfathered 160kw site (pre Biscayne) for them was?? I know it was in the Gables somewhere but don't have a location. High power didn't do them much good as the tower height was just below 200 ft.
Edited by bossmsx on 08/03/05 10:07 PM.

County Line Rd area with the TV towers

Rules changed and many stations became C1's with reduced spacing requirements.

WYOR(105.1) was on one of the old WVCG(1080) sticks around Ludlam(67ave) and I want to say Bird Rd(40st). They advertised 160Kw even from One Biscayne. Somewhere along the line the dropped 2dB. Remember back when every so often WYOR(or WVCG-FM) would come out with a current FM dial card, highlighting their station?
