WPPA Turns 66

From their site ...

On May 9th, 1946, A.V. Tidmore brought the first commercial radio station to Schuylkill County. And it has remained a part of the everyday fabric of people for seven decades, with local programming, and most importantly, local ownership.

A.V. Tidmore was a pioneer in the broadcasting field, and his legacy continues with WPPA, and sister station T-102. A.V.’s son Argie, and his surviving spouse, Georgine, continue that tradition today, and the entire staff, and community wish them many more years of success. Happy Birthday WPPA!

(Last year Charles Osgood promod their 65th on his CBS network show.)

I moved up this way / out this way almost twenty years ago to a different line of work, after spending the previous 14 years at major market stations. And I've been amazed at the performance, professionalism and consistency of WPPA (and of T-102). Lol, seriously : I haven't applied for even a part-time gig at either one of them, partly on the suspicion that I might not be good enough for their standards.

If they took ratings for Schuylkill county, full-service WPPA no doubt would be the #2 finisher, behind only WAVT. And there would be a scramble for the distant # 3 station.

That #3, upon further thought, might be another well-done full-service A/C -- WEEU.

Happy Birthday, WPPA! This is doing radio the way it used to be done ; the way it should still be done.

I remember WPPA very well from the late 60's when I had worked at competitor WPAM in
in Pottsville. They were a powerhouse with very pleasant radio announcers.
( That's what they were called back then-not personalities or disc jockeys )
I especially remember their morning man,"Ed Romance" (Romanski) Good polish name.
He had the ideal radio voice . Deep, smooth, and a great air personality.
Unfortunately he could enter the larger markets such as Philly.
WPAM received his return air tape from a Philly station.
He was well loved and great for the coal region regardless.
Thanks for the memories.

Retired Guy.

Longtimers at PPA included Jim Thompson and Sidney McIlvain, air name Willy Whistle, who did the 5:00-6:00AM Wake-Up show weekdays and hosted Country Music on Saturdays. He died in 1996 at 83.
