WPRI Goes HD*

I was watching Eyewitness News at 11 tonight, and when they showed the school/business closing graphics, to my surpise, they filled the entire widescreen TV. It looked really nice. The regular picture sat stretched inside of a 16:9 box.

So they obviously have the ability to transmit HD, but the actual newcast isn't, though the school closing graphics, news promos, and lineups are.

I also saw a WPRI: #1 at 11 promo, and it showed the open in HD. It looked great.

It's been that way for at least a year now. The system they use (Newsroom Solutions) outputs in HD so it can overlay without having to downgrade the signal to SD. This allows the weather alert and school closing system to be broadcast over HD syndicated and network programming.

Really? Is that why they are getting a few million dollars of HD gear? Maybe "anytime soon" is a relative term.
