WPRI Live Doppler

Whatever happened to WPRI's Live Doppler radar? I knew that they operated their own radar next to their transmitter in Rehoboth, but if you look at their radar, there's no longer a sweep line originating out of Rehoboth. The one nearby is the NWS radar from Taunton. By the way, I generally hate when you see multiple sweep lines on a radar. Very fake and deceiving.

Do any of the Providence affiliates have any leg to stand on? None of them operate a chopper. None of them operate their own live doppler (WCVB and WBZ from Boston do). As it's been discussed here, none of them do ANY news in HD. They are one of the, if not the only DMA in the country that doesn't have at least one affiliate carrying HD news.

Their sister in New Haven (WTNH) used to have a similar set-up, but I haven't noticed it being used anymore either. I also used to find it annoying. There was a sweep from their own radar at their transmitter site in Hamden, one from Taunton, MA, one from Albany and one from Upton, LI. Very cheesy to see all those beams on the graphic IMHO.

Just for perspective, all stations across the country have been in cost-cutting model. It doesn't surprise me about the choppers -- Providence doesn't really need them. Channel 6 is in receivership. What do you expect?!? Heck, here in Phoenix, 3 stations started sharing a chopper because of the poor economy. The other two don't use their choppers neearly as much as they used to.

The live doppler is still integrated into the weather system, there is just no sweep animated with it. (I am unsure why that is.) but the radar is still online and functioning.

How are the multiple sweeps "fake" , sonicdoomario? Please explain that one to me. All three are coming from radar sites which exist (Taunton, Upton, NY and Albany, NY) , and they all are accurate to the data given from those sites.

Thanks for the clarification.

As far as the fake part is concerned, this isn't just WPRI, it's from a lot of TV stations. Most of the time the multiple sweeps are just there for eye candy and glitter, and you don't see the sweeps "write" over the precip with new data. Also, the multiple sweeps are generally exaggerated. For example, I've seen some radars with a sweep line eminating out of Taunton that extends to Canada, which is kind of absurd.
