WPRI Sports Team Shrinks to 2

WPRI's sports team has shrunk to just Sara Hogan and J.P. Smollins, now that Patrick Little has officially been promoted to morning anchor.

It's hard to imagine needing more than two dedicated sports anchors with an experienced sports anchor still on staff and available to fill in as needed.

Not so fast. Since last week, they've had a job posting on their site to fill the void (http://www.wpri.com/dpp/about_us/operations/full-time-sports-anchor). According to the description, whoever gets it will immediately be thrown into the weeknight shows. I plan on producing a demo for my boy who's looking for a job in sports broadcasting.

Then there's this guy that I work with doing high school sports for cable and he's been on the grind for over 2 decades. He anchored sports for the now-defunct cable news in Fall River during the 90s and worked in radio in the 80s. He currently works for the Bristol County DA while continuing to do sports play-by-play for various area cable operations on the side. I plan on working with him this week, so I'll let him know about the opening and see if he's interested. I think he got the potential for the director's position that Patrick had.

And if it means anything to anyone, they're still looking for someone permanent to do the weekend shows (http://www.wpri.com/dpp/about_us/operations/east-providence-eyewitness-news-job-part-time-weekend-anchor-).

Boy, that seems pretty fair to the weekend sportscasters on that station, should they want an opportunity to move into weeknights...

I'm sure they're welcome to apply for the position.

I would like to see Joe Rocco(from WJAR) return to the sports airwaves on Catamore Blvd. WPRI should move Danielle North to nights. She is great on weekend mornings as well. She would make an excellent fit M-F, alongside Mike Montecalvo when Karen Adams decides to retire.

Danielle used to work the night shift a few years back. Since she's been there for over a decade, she would be the logical choice for Karen's seat.

Not to totally change to another subject (still WPRI-oriented), but is it true that the ratings pecking order is now 12, 10 (thanks to Leno), 64, 6 (how embarassing! a VHF losing to a UHF!) and 28? In my hometown, I'm guessing that it's 5, 7, 4, 25, 38 and 56.

In this current era of digital TV, such an argument may be far fetched. Now, if WLNE's ratings start to trail, say, WSBE, then it's time to start panicking!
