WPRI - To much chroma key

WPRI has a great news product, but I do not like the visual presentation. It seems like they are using more computer generated graphics than ever. The fake newsroom behind the Anchor desk was bad enough. But this past week I'm noticing fake computer generated monitors dropping down from the ceiling etc.... To much fake stuff and not enough realism on that set. I don't like it. It's just looking cheesy. Maybe most people don't care. Is it just me, or do I have a valid point here? I would like to see a real news set with things that can actually be touched. To me that is what looks professional. Not an entire newscast that depends on a green screen.

Ok a day later and nobody cares. That's fine... lol. But I want to add to this. WPRI has done some things very right over the years in regard to their set. Back in the early to mid 90's they added a second level to the set that was actually useable. They had the Sports guy standing up there most of the time. It was such a great looking feature and they went and totally did away with. That's a move that I don't get at all. It looked so nice and they ruined it.

20 or so years ago they used to do a long shot of the studio during the end credits. The camera used to slowly zoom out and you would see lots of floor in front of the anchor desk. This made the studio appear large and to me that looked more professional. You don't see that anymore either.

Now everything looks small and artificial. I wish that WPRI would hire someone who could give that studio a Major market appearance like it used to have. Does anyone else notice this in their market? Stations which used to have great looking sets, but now they just look like crap?

I share your view, actually.
One of the stations I used to work for has used the same "virtual set" since the day they signed on their 10pm newscast. The only thing "real" on the whole set is the desk. I'd be okay with that, if the virtual set that they used actually looked real. Instead it looks like it was drawn up with a bad version of Poser. The funny thing is, just to the left (off the camera) they have a very real newsroom that actually looks very good on camera, but they never show it or use it on their newscasts.

That's not to say I don't like chroma key. I used to like the way WBZ TV used chroma key in their news set in the 1980s. But that was integrated, and I do not see very many people integrating the device these days, it's either all or nothing.
