WPRK Changes?

God, I hope not. One by one, every station that I used to listen to has changed it's format for the worse. WPRK is the only station I really enjoy listening to anymore. Of course since it's the only station here that plays independent and new music, and had DJs that actually sound like real people who are enthusiastic about what they played, I guess someone had to ruin it.

I think that's a great idea.

There are other stations in the country that have done it with great success.

Look at WHUR-FM in Washington DC. Owned by Howard University.

I think actually becoming a station with an actual format would help bring in a more diverse audience and could probably bring in some good money for Rollins with Non-Commercial Underwriting.

It will raise the bar for Rollins students to become better in Radio, not just get on the air and wing it.

The College has to be losing money with the station.

How many college stations have a structured format? Not many I would imagine.

How many college non-comms make money? Not many I would imagine.

Orlando GM - are you a GM? Or just call yourself one? Just curious.
I asked this before and got no response, so ???

Colleges are rapidly parting company with stations that serve no other purpose than being a place for students to share their music collections.

The three options are... Become an educational asset, become a revenue generator, or the school sells the station. It's just not something that schools see as worthwhile in terms of cost and risk (students live and not on delay putting a license at risk).

Ask the GM himself, don't you work there? Turning to a public forum for answers is not the best course of action...

Yes, I do volunteer there as a "Community DJ", & have been for about 8 years.
I haven't heard a response from him directly.
Someone else posted something on his behalf about automation, but that wasn't a direct answer to my concern.

This was posted yesterday about the letter I was CC'd this past weekend that sums it pretty well:

I'm just asking for speculation here from those who have been in radio for years, since I'm not getting a direct answer from the GM himself.
Ron, WPRK's GM, denies the station will change, but I hear the conversations from the rest of the staff & other DJ's.
The things they said & all the activity behind the scenes has me concerned.
And the fact that a publication picked it up just added to it.

Looks like formatically, nothing is changing. Which is meaningless, since the station can hardly be heard 5-6 miles out.

This is true, but given where it is, I betcha there is close to a million people in the footprint.

If he says the station won't change, get it in an e-mail so at least you can call him out when he does change, (not that it will be worth much). I know that students have rallied around the station before, but if it's really an important part of the community, you should be able to raise some money from those dedicated listeners to show that people still care about the (non) format. This is what public radio has to do all around the country to justify its existence. At Rollins, alumni especially. If they make specific donations to the school and the station to "keep it as is" or threaten to withhold donations to the school if it changes, then you might have something that gets the attention of the school's administration.

And the misinformation just keeps on comin!

Quote from the news article: The FCC [Federal Communications Commission] requires someone at the station at all times to take the transmitter readings to make sure we don’t interfere with other stations on our 91.5 frequency or stations near our frequency, and if there is a national, state or local emergency, the station operator knows what do to and tell listeners."

Really? Better get my help wanted ad on Craigs List asap.
