WPRO Archives: It was a graveyard smash...

Holland,
Loved that YouTube clip. And to think I would have been the overnight guy when 99.3 was originally planned. I would have been on the island and taking care of the transmitter as well. You may remember broker Ansel Chaney; he was the one who put me in-touch-with the fellow who bought the CP. I ultimately was involved in the first studio build, in Narragansett's Mariner Square. I was floored one day: Salty and Mickey Brine stopped in! Talk about being in the presence of royalty!

"your group could almost pass for The Moody Blues"

Get this: Not pictured, but present at lunch that day, REAL royalty: Sedaka's producer on that album, George Martin.

Remember the Beatles sound-alike band Klaatu?
At the time, WGNG was running a hype for Capitol Records, asking "IS IT THE BEATLES???"
I asked Martin that day, and in a Monty Python-quality British accent, he scoffed "rubbish."

99.3 and 95.9 WCRI, "The Classical Station" both have transmitters here -- and Block Island as city-of-license -- but neither broadcast from here. WCRI-being-an-offspring-of WCRB/Boston results in the station executing much-of-what-comes-out-the-speaker with polished Boston talent. Commercials for little shops in Wickford and other local direct retailers sound REAL classy.

WCRI and WJZS both transmit from the same site on B.I.: a former NWS tower off Corn Neck Rd., if memory serves.

Hey Holland,

I heard about this stunt from several people, but had never taken the time to listen to the audio. That is great stuff! I can't believe you guys got away with that. Besides the FCC warning, what were the repurcussions?
