WPRO Talk

I think it has run its course. Same callers to almost every show. There are days when the station is on most of the day in our home, and the same pablum, same guests, same callers. One irresponsible talk host JD who only wants sensationalism.

That pretty much sums up the situation over at 630. It has gotten rather stale. But then again...one could say the exact same thing about the call-in talk format over at 1480-WSAR too.

Call-in talk radio almost seems to be more for the chronic regular callers...the ones who end up becoming celebrities in thier own right...and the mainly ego-centric hosts....than for the wider audience the format tries to reach out to.

Talk radio no longer tries to reach a broad audience. It aims to reach the demographic most likely to listen - older, very conservative, more interested in national affairs than the average person.

RE "Talk radio no longer tries to reach a broad audience. "

Amen!

This is not a WPRO issue.

Owners of Talk-formatted stations seem content to settle for a 5-share.

Thankfully here in Philly we have all-news KYW 1060 and NPR's WHYY 90.9 as alternatives to the fare on WPHT 1210 and Salem's WNTP 990. Holland, what would you do to WPRO to beef up its numbers and make it really stand out, as it did in its Top-40 days?

"Is this a trick question?"

It would be inappropriate to respond specifically, in this context, at this time...FOR FREE. :)

My point remains: This is not about WPRO.
Too much of RADIO is aiming too low, most-conspicuously heritage AMs.
Thus the opportunity for FMs to talk.
(And that IS a local opportunity.)

I find WPRO is basically the same "show" with different hosts. Matt Allen is the only one who throws in some variation and sometimes makes up his own topics. They just follow the one or two big news stories and take calls from the same people who repeat the same diatribe on every show.

Replacing Dan with someone more "liberal" would turn some people on their heads, and would give the callers a chance to alter their routine.

But for the price, I shoulden't complain so much ;D

I would agree that it has sounded a little stale over at News Talk 630 WPRO & 99.7 FM lately.
My suggestion would be for more unique talk shows.
The hosts all have potential they just need some work, a chance to break away from the monologue and phone calls routine.

Oh yeah-give me 9AM-6PM Monday-Friday...then give me the FM simulcast. Thought I forgot about that huh? :D

Re: RE "Dream On Lefty Loser"

It's not unusual to have dropoffs after landslide elections like the one we just had, ;D you will see the same pattern in 1981, 85 and 95. It will pick up again next year.

Clearly, I'm remiss.
Apologies if I've been ambiguous.

When I said "this is not a WPRO issue," what I MEANT was "this is not a WPRO issue."

I may not be the biggest Holland Cooke fan by any stretch of the imagination, but I think he's right on this, and I think you'd be hard pressed to find a more qualified observer/consultant of news/talk than Holland. I'd definitely listen to Holland before I listened to someone who wants to point to 30-year-old trends as so what's coming up next for talk radio. I'd also like to note that there wasn't really much in the way of what we now know as conservative talk in 81 or 85, before the repeal of the fairness doctrine.

So are you saying that you believe that most of WPRO's numbers come after 6PM, and that anyone who listens to the content on the FM band doesn't count?

To consultants, this familiar grammatical construction is what-we-choose-to-regard-as "a compliment." :)

Re-start the tape...

Hey, once-upon-a-time, night time was The Right Time!
But I AGREE that applying what-used-to-work to-today's-situation is a recipe for nostalgia.

Or, as media visionary Bob Dylan once wrote: "Ya better start swimmin,' or you'll sink like a stone, 'cause the times they are a-changin.'"

Speaking of swimmin,' good evening from Baton Rouge.

If I'm honest, I've had a copy of your "needless to say..." pamphlet and it was one of my most valuable tools when training new part-timers that were cracking the mic on weekends. I think sometimes it's just difficult to swallow hard truths from a consultant, and the old "don't trust the consultant" mentality lives on. I think you're spot on, at least from my point-of-view from the music-intensive side of the business.
