WPRV 790 Received in Port aux Basques (1/26/2012)

Out running errands last night, I picked up AM 790 WPRV from Providence, Rhode Island in the car. On a side note, I picked up French on AM 890 but never got the calls for that one. Tried to get 720 WGN a second time but the spot I was in (Irving) made it impossible to get either that or a clear identification of WBBM 780.

I don't any other stations in Canada besides CJDC in BC (but it's English with C&W music). Perhaps a TA on 891?

What time was this? If it wasn't too late you may have heard something from Europe on 890.

Roughly 7:30 pm Newfoundland time, and to clarify "Irving", the Irving Gas Station (Tim Hortons next door).

For the record, WPRV 790 is 5000 watts, 24/7 from Providence, Rhode Island, about 40 miles south-southwest of Boston. So that's a good catch all the way up there in Newfoundland. From what I've heard, you do get WBZ 1030 Boston around the clock in the Maritimes.

Two interesting things about Newfoundland. You have your own time zone, 1 1/2 hours ahead of Eastern Time. And you still have a few stations with V call letters from when Newfoundland was independent from the rest of Canada. Most people in radio know about C call signs in Canada, K and W in the U.S. and X in Mexico... but not V in Newfoundland.

Funny that you should be in an Irving Gas Station, considering the Irving Family owns not just service stations and convenience stores (some of which are found in New England) but timber and oil industries, newspapers and yes, radio stations.

I'm wondering if it could've been Algeria on 891. I've heard that one in Europe, but the signal (in the UK, France, and Germany) hasn't exactly been a monster.

If it was 891 and I got it on the car radio, that'd be a wild catch.

Another thought: Could've been WAMG in Dedham/Boston, broadcasting Spanish (and not French as I first thought). Not really uncommon for me to pull in more Massachusetts/Maine stations at night in the car that I haven't noticed yet. Again, I never left that frequency on long enough to get calls (even if pronounced in other languages). Heck, last year or so, I once picked up WGR 550 in the car, while parked in the driveway. I don't check out the AM radio in the car unless I'm out to the store or taking stuff out of the back to make room for other stuff.

That may be more plausible than Algeria. I think WAMG also runs fairly high power at night....albeit directional. And as I said, the 891 from Algeria doesn't have all that great of a nighttime signal...at least IME. If Tincap or one of the other more accomplished TA DX-ers is watching this thread, perhaps thy could weigh in with any experiences and offer their take(s) on the matter.

When I was stationed near Boston in fall 1980, I think I heard a whistle-het & music that sounded maybe like chanting (this has been 31 years, so I am guessing here) on 890 or 891. And I believe it happened on numerous occasions.

891 Algeria used to be reported often among New England DXers....so I don't think Algeria is as far-fetched as it sounds. I figure, after those reports, I was really hearing Algeria.

And my AM radios were barefoot back then!

To the OP --- if there is a streaming link to that Algeria 891, maybe it's worth a listen (next time you hear this), to see if things match up!

To the best of my knowledge, Algeria on 891 is running 50 kW, so it's not exactly a flame thrower (although Port-aux-Basques must be a pretty good perch for snagging TA catches). As well, doesn't 891 broadcast in Arabic, as it's Radio Chaine 1? Or is Radio Chaine 1 bilingual?

I thought 891 ran monster power....has it been reduced over the last 30 years?

Once received CKXG underneath WRKO 680 a great catch considering the saturation strength of WRKO here and VOCM under the old WEEI 590 both in Salem, NH. Just came back from the Irving station with a Circle K convenience store on Route 28 in Salem. I often spent time in Atlantic Canada years back and seem to remember a VOAM, am I dreaming?

The VO's that exist are:

VOCM 590
VOWR 800
VOAR 1210
VOCM-FM 97.5 (once known as "VO-FM" IIRC)

All are in St. John's.

Long ago, there were other VO's, but I think the others converted to a C call or went defunct up to the early 60s, from the Vane A. Jones books I have seen online (thanx DavidEduardo).

That's what I always thought.....but based on my biz trips to Europe and visits with my daughter, who lives in London, it sure doesn't sound like they're running monster power. In fact, I'm not even sure that what I'm hearing is Algeria....although that would seem to be the most likely suspect.

Euro-African Medium Wave (http://www.emwg.info/) has it listed at 50 kW, with a question mark ~> 891 kHz ALG - Alger Chaîne 1, Oulet Fayet (50?). EMWG is a pretty good, up-to-date site, but I'll do some poking around to confirm.

EDIT: Hmmmm.... fmscan.org has it listed at 600 kW.

Apparently there are several different power levels being reported. This guide, which indicates that it was updated January 24, lists them as 500kW day, 250kW night:
