WPRX 1120 AM Celebrates 17th Anniversary

WPRX 1120 AM celebrated its 17th Anniversary on Sunday with a party in their parking at 321 Ellis Street in New Britain. http://newbritainherald.com/articles/2010/08/01/news/doc4c561dbe03746039508234.txt

WPRX was founded in 1993 by Oscar Nieves who LMA'd the station formerly known as WBIS, which was based in Britstol. In 1998 Nieves and a partner purchased the station outright for $750,000.

The 1000 watt day, 500 watt by night station has had numerous studio locations over the past 17 years and even spent some time LMA'd to rival Hispanic Station WLAT 910 back in mid-late 2004 until early 2005.

WPRX's studio locations over the years:

610-620 Main Street New Britain
10 Main Street New Britain
81 West Main Street New Britain
20-28 Sergent Street Hartford
321 Ellis Street New Britain

WPRX's management also claims the the station is the only Puerto Rican owned Hispanic formatted radio station in the United States.

Editors Note: I live not too far from Sherbooke Street and WPRX makes Middletown's WMRD 1150 almost impossible to listen to on my walkman without doing some serious tricks. It should be noted while WPRX was off the air due to a power failure because of the tornado on July 21st, WBBR 1130 from NYC was coming in Crystal Clear Day and Night. And WMRD was booming in during the day.

Marc, don't be such a party pooper. ;D

I bet that was some interesting radio, though...

If you only had $100 for every inch you wrote. Or, $8 a word, why, you'd have a job!
