WPTF has morning opening?!?!

According to the Curtis Media website, "We’re NewsTalk 680 WPTF, and we’re seeking our next great morning host. If you love local radio, prepare like crazy, immerse yourself in the community and are a selfless team player, this could be your last job. Morning zoos and in-your-face instigators need not apply; this a fast-paced, news-intensive, politically-neutral show with a contributing cast of six."

Any comments?

I had heard where Jack Boston had a reoccurance of the leukemia he was first diagnosed with after he started the job at WPTF in October 2006. He has been off the air for a while, with Jeff Metcalf (sp?) filling in for him. I hope Jack is doing OK. I used to listen to him years ago on 93.3 down in Washington/Greenville.

What kind of comments are you seeking Mike? The poor guy has been sick for awhile. Sad story.

Lighten up Fidel, he's just trying to get the ball rolling. Personally, I think you ought to go for it, Mike. You'd be like a duck in water in the middle of Raleigh politics.

Thanks, allnews.

Fidelipack, I don't know Jack, but I am told he is a class act and I wish him well! My intention was to open discussion about what many would view as a prime job in radio. Thought there might be some comments about things like:

Who would be a good choice to fill Jack's shoes?
Is it a really good job?
What direction might Curtis take?

You know, the usual kinds of speculation we always discuss on this board.

no need to explain xtalker..most of us on here have enough sense to get your drift..but there is always one that doesn't

The foremost concern is Jack's health. Can anybody from Curtis Media give us an update?

betcha bryan freeman has already thrown his name in the hat? any takers?

Why ya' think he'd cut and run? Seems like he's got a good thing going at SJS.

I used to listen to Jack on 93.3 when I lived on the outer banks & loved his shows, though I'm NOT a fan of him doing talk radio, especially WPTF, Jeff Metcalf is far more entertaining and does a far better job. I wish Jack the best and would love to see him back in Top40/CHR radio instead of talk radio.

while i love jack personally (we're not close, but we've worked together for 6 or 8 years), i also was a bigger fan of his morning show on 102.9. his talk image softened somehow. i was not a fan.

geoff metcalfe, on the other hand, sounds like an arrogant amateur, imho

Be listening in the next few weeks for "auditions" for PTF's morning host....some names and voices you'll recognize, some you won't, but it'll be interesting, all the same. Can't imagine WSJS's Brian Freeman being interested in the post, he's become a really big fish in his pond, and is quite happy with his 70 hour work weeks. Last I heard about Jack Boston, he's hanging on....not good, but better than the alternative! :'(

Sorry to read that you feel that way. Obviously, you're not a regular listener....WPTF has 6 1/2 HOURS of live programming a day, not to mention LIVE newscasts at the top and bottom of the hour beginning at 5 am each weekday, plus a weekend news staff. The WPTF Newsroom alone has more full-time employees than most station clusters have total for all their on-air staff. Don't believe me?? Stop by sometime, place is hopping all the time.

I don't know what "heritage" Jim A is talking about. To my ear WPTF absolutely sucked in the 80's and 90's. I have to agree with Flowergirl that it's probably better now than it has been since the glory years of the 40's and 50's. Their storm coverage yesterday was just great. Nobody could touch them. As for the "satellite feeds," what AM talk station doesn't have Rush, Sean and few others these days?

The operative phrase is "to my ear". Fortunately for Curtis Media, thousands of Raleigh listeners thought it was a fine station through the 80s and 90s. It was among the top five in the market in ratings and revenue. If it hadn't been for the revenue produced by WPTF, WQDR would likely not have become a highly successful country station.

Not being able to speak on the history of WPTF or WQDR, this I can say....Talk radio is an ever evolving medium like no other. What was successful as little as ten or even five years ago would fall flat and loose more money than a teenager with a new credit card if we were to stick with it, or go back to it, whatever "it" may be. Some of that is due to a more transient society today....ie here today, Orlando, DC, or Dallas by September. Coming from one "heritage" station in the West, to another, to me, being a "heritage" station means being on the air continuously for a number of generations, and 84 years certainly qualifies as several generations, and name recognition. When I took my first job selling the "heritage" station that I cam from, a friend who had sold for an "also ran" which is no longer in existence by the way, told me to be prepared to be bounced out of a lot of businesses. I have to say, in over nine years of selling that station I was shown the door only a hand full of times. Name recognition, folks, name recognition. Just representing who I did commanded a certain amount of respect. So, IMHO, WPTF still qualifies as a "heritage" station, no, it's not the same, but neither are we! And btw, it's till in the top five in the metro.

Anyone who doubts WPTF is a "heritage' station just hasn't paid attention. You don't have to like a station to acknowledge it's success today and yesterday. WPTF has always had a reputation for service to it's community in the form of on air programming as community involvement. In the day of Durham Life ownership, WPTF was the leader in adult radio in the state. It was the station most others of it's ilk were patterned after.

Today, Cutris continues the tradition of community involvement, local programming and news (sure, they use some syndication - that is just good business) but offer more local content than ANY other station in the Raleigh-Durham market!

The station continues strong in ratings and revenue!
