WPTF - Is It True?

WPTF/Raleigh... do their calls originate from standing for "We Protect The Family?" I heard from someone else that an insurance agent, or company, founded the station.

Any confirmation?

That was the slogan associated with WPTF dating from the 1927 acquisition of the station by Durham Life Insurance Company. The station was originally founded in 1924 by Wynne Radio Company and used the calls WFBQ and WRCO before Durham Life bought it.

It has been WPTF for 78 years, and those calls originally DID reflect Durham Life's advertising slogan "We Protect The Family".

Interestingly, WSM in Nashville, TN was purchased a few years prior to that by the National Life and Accident Insurance Company, and similarly adopted that company's slogan for the radio station... "We Shield Millions".
