WPTT 1360 Overnight??

OldSchoolWoman said:
Overnights on 1360 was a robojock in 1959 or so. Probably the first. They called it the "musicmachine". I'll do an overnight show for free. Just let me do it from my home in sunny F-L-A. I would love to talk all the people in the Mon Valley who are up all night watching UFO's.

I am curious as to what a Robojock would have looked like in 1959......like one of those old stacking turntables maybe
with a spindle 4 ft. high?? I 've heard descriptions of the one TAE was using in the late 70's that sound bad enough...
I can only imagine the prior generation.

They had audio tape back then, right? Couldn't it have just been several banks of reel-to-reel tape recorders with foil tape at the end of each reel to trip a switch to start the next reel?

Aside from the fact that Mr. Noory et al. (and whatever's left of Art Bell on the air) landed easily on CC's own WPGB...

If you can't find "Coast to Coast" on the AM dial at night, you aren't trying hard enough. It's on approximately 30 stations from the top to the bottom of the band from all over the east and midwest...and beyond...that put a listenable signal into Western PA...

A little birdie told me, not that I listen to little birdies or anything.........

The station is done, at least in its current format. the overnight was just the first thing, the contract to Bell ran out and WPTT didn't want to renew. Coming soon to a 1360 near you, all business talk (rumors of the call letters WMNY have been fluttered about), Cullen is off in two weeks and the station will basically be all business all the time. Not sure of the the final arrangemenst for what will air when, but high school football is out, in comes Duquense University football (if anyone notices that a certain Saturday host also works at DU, you are starting to get the picture, as it is not a coincidence). This is the cut your losses moment for WPTT and Renda, he leases the station to certain Saturday host for as long as the checks clear, but talk as it has been presented at 1360 is over.

Tha plan sounds really Primo.

If true, that isn't a bad move, because while business talk won't overwhelm the ratings it will attract a cult audience of rich people, and that's not a bad demographic.

Didn't WLFP go all-business last year?

They were about 15 feet wide, 8 feet high and held at least three 12 inch reel to reels which held precorded music with a tone on the end which signaled the unit to peform the next function. All of the current songs, along with the commericals, PSAs and legal IDs were on carts that were loaded and unloaded via a carrosel looking device. It wasn't until the mid/late 1990s when computers began taking over all of these functions.

They hooked up with the BusinessTalkRadio folks, who bought them, and are running that network's Lifestyle Talk Radio Network offshoot. I haven't taken apart that operation, but I suspect the "Lifestyle" side still has some programming from the other network.

No matter...1550 is the crummiest signal in the market, no? A high-band 1KW station with barely enough night power to get them across the street from their transmitter site.

I think most of the money is made now, on "business radio", from selling time to brokered programmers.

Actually they won't have any listeners at all, and will make money from the LMA agreement and whatever else they can broker.

There's good money in having no listeners, just ask 620 and 770.

Business radio that doesn't get out of the Mon Valley should really appeal to all the CEO's living in East McKeesport and Wilmerding who are up all night on E Trade. What about Scott Shannon's True Oldies Channel? I don't think they are in the Greater Pitt area. But then what do I know.

MsMusic- I understand your point.

But if there was ever a place that needed more information on how to make money, it would be the Mon Valley!
