WPTT & WJAS..Why not just flip the two?

Alright I will shut up about Renda's stations. But you know how WPTT was going to try and get the 910 signal because it was stronger however they have to wait for the FCC to approve...etc? Well if WPTT has higher ratings than its sister WJAS and WJAS has a better signal than WPTT (atleast for me at night, I live near the international airport and Wptt sounds like a 16 year old working a mcdonalds drive through at night where WJAS sounds pretty clear), why not just make WJAS the talk station and simply make the weak WPTT the sad truck stop oldie music station and spend some bucks promoting the flip and tweaking the programing on the two? It would only cost Renda to repromote the stations and he wouldn't have to jump through hoops and deal with the FCC and high costs of transferring licenses and stuff.

Just an idea. Then again I am an idiot. ha. ha.

In the ratings for Fall of last year (the last batch I saved), WJAS had nine stations above it on the list, WPTT had twenty-four. WJAS beat WXDX-FM, WRKZ-FM, WZPT-FM, WLTJ-FM, and WRRK-FM.

On the other hand, WPTT was beaten by WORD-FM, KQV-AM, WPKL-FM/WASP-AM, WAMO-AM/WJJJ-FM, and WJPA-FM/WJPA-AM.

Tell you the truth it is not a bad idea.

The only thing I can think of is that 80s somethings can at times not be able to find the station once it would flip frequencies.

But since WPTT's audience is just as old as WJAS'- then why not?

To be honest, I think WJAS's audience may even be a little younger than WPTT's.

McGann's afternoon program on 1320 is aimed at 45-64; who knows what Hoerth is aimed at.

(Mind you, I like Doug's show.)

My wife and I must be the only people under 35 that listen to WJAS...haha. As Realist pointed out, WJAS ratings are decent, why toy with something that works to help something that isn't?

Wow. I should of looked at the ratings because I brought it up. I am suprised WJAS is more successful than WPTT, but then again the music on WJAS makes me sleepy. I like 3WS and 92.1 though! :D

It should be noted that any station on 1320 will do better than the same station do if it were on 1360.

But WPTT is one of six stations in Pittsburgh with all or mostly talk on the air, the others being 104.7, KDKA, 1550, WAMO-AM, and WORD-FM. WJAS is the only station on the air playing music for the AARP crowd. Therefore, WJAS is getting 100% if the listeners who want that programming, while WPTT has lots of competitors.

You forgot WEAE and WBGG, but that's okay.

The only stations that WPTT beats out of that mix are WAMO- which really only caters to 8% of the population in the market- and 1550 The Edge- whose signal makes WPTT look like KDKA.

They should beat WORD. For a time they weren't even beating WBGG.

"You forgot WEAE and WBGG, but that's okay."

That was deliberate. I was counting sports talk as a separate category. It's a purely arbitrary thing. I guess I could have lumped religious talk as also separate.

It's one of the reasons Heftel bought the original WJAS and turned it into 13Q.... 1320 is the second best AM signal in the market behind KD's 50,000 watts.

Third best daytime--620's signal is a MONSTER, with only 5.5kw. 1080's also a somewhat-directional 50kw daytime.

At night, 1320's the only decent 5kw--and second best in the market (though there's hope for 620's nighttime increase...)

Yeah, I forgot about 620. And actually 540 is even better (if they haven't gone through with turning the power down to allow an upgrade of a station in the DC area). But back in the day it was the #2 stick in the market.

WJAS still enjoys a very substantial following for an AM station playing music. I am hard pressed to think of another AM station that is doing as well with a similar format. That is a symptom of Pittsburgh having an older demographic, and being kind of a strange marketing duck in other ways too. Flipping that format to the tin-whistle WPTT nighttime signal would no doubt result in a re-enactment of the famous WKRP "Heck No, We Won't Go!" protest amongst our seniors.

(don't believe me? At one time I worked for Hills Department Stores, when they were running their Wiener Wednesdays
promotion...customers over 55 got a free drink and a hot dog from the snack bar with any purchase. One year, Christmas fell on a Wednesday, and the store was closed. An angry senior confronted me the next day and accused us of cheating him out of his hot dog!)

Remember also that unlike the cities in Florida with very old populations, Pittsburgh is full of old people who chose not to move. Old folks who are open to change are more likely to relocate to a warm, sunny climate like Florida. Old folks who like things to stay the same stay put in Pittsburgh.

And most younger people who want to have jobs have to move out of Pittsburgh.
