WPUR in Atlantic City,NJ streaming

Cat Country 107.3 in Atlantic City,NJ is now streaming their signal on the internet! This is the ONLY country station currently operating in New Jersey. At least this is another good alternative for we folks in northern New Jersey who've been without a terrestrial country station since May of 2002!

Re: WPUR: Did I Hear This Right??

I was driving to work the other day & swear I heard the WPUR morning jock doing birthday announcements say "washed up country singer T.G. Sheppard is 65". I am outside their coverage area but they do come in pretty listenable here on summer mornings. Did I hear right?

What would be the reason for saying this other than a cheap laugh or to disassociate Cat Country with '70's material - but don't they have a weekend country oldies show? In a town with casinos its possible TG Sheppard could work in the area someday. I might expect this from another format station, but country stations used to support their own, even "classic" artists off the playlist. For younger readers, he had a long string of radio hits in the '70s', not an award winner, like a Mark Chestnutt or Tracy Byrd or Joe Diffie, a popular radio artist.

If I misunderstood I'm sorry, but not sure what else he would have been saying.

Perhaps Sheppard once no-showed a WPUR appearance or something and he has a bad rep at the station? How long have they been country?

They went country June, 1998 - not during his hit-making days.

Re: WPUR: Did I Hear This Right??

Wow! I got a mention on radio-info.com! I'm the jock you heard - thanks for listening!
Yes I did identify TG Sheppard as a "Washed Up" country singer! Mostly as a joke. I didn't research it, rehearse it, or plan it... it just came out of my mouth! But, actually, yes....someone who hasn't had anyhing near a hit in over 10 years probably is "washed up" - at least in my opinion. And, it's my show, and my station, so my opinion is the only one I really care about:)
By the way... I've been the only PD WPUR has ever had --- and since 1998 we've never played a TG Sheppard song as a current. I'm sure, though, we've given his songs a few spins on our Sunday Morning "Cat Classics" show.
For the record --- Sheppard has never stiffed us, been a no-show, or anything else bad. As a matter of fact, I remember doing a phone interview with him back in the late 80's (when he had a hit or two!) and I seem to recall that he was a nice enough guy... Also, since 1998, I don't recall him playing Atlantic City - and, I highly doubt he would be much of a draw. Nothing personal against the man - he just hasn't had any hits lately - and neither have Joe Stamply, Moe Bandy, BJ Thomas, or Elvis Presley!

Re: WPUR: Did I Hear This Right??

Thanks for the answer. I guess I go by the old school rule of country stations not making fun of country singers because there were enough other formats who mocked country music artists. As I said, there are the singers who win all the arwards, then there are the ones who just quietly keep turning out radio hits for many years, as TG Sheppard did. Guess that means many of my recent favorites: MCC, Kathy Mattea, Hal Ketcham, Doug Stone, all fall in the washed up category too. And soon it will be Blake Shelton, Dierkes Bentley, & Darryl Worley! Guess it also goes for all those forgotten jocks on those old shore country stations 1520 WIBG, WKOE, WBNJ, WJRZ, WXNJ...Guess time marches on - don't get old!!

By the way, Cat Country is a good sounding country station - I can pick it up in the mornings all summer here on the Bucks-montgomery County line!
