WPVI 6-2, a missed opportunity

WPVI 6-1 (and analog 6) are running special programming (a police officer's funeral) in lieu of ABC programming. Rather than take advantage of 6-2 to run said ABC show they chose to keep regularly scheduled programming consisting of Sunday morning public affairs shows. :(

With all-digital tv a mere 5 months away you'd think WPVI-DT would be used to its full potential and step in when needed. Maybe after 9/17/09 we'll have 6-2 running ABC when 6-1 has special programming. And maybe 6-3 will show news in lieu of endless repeats of the same weather forecast. :)

I could make the monkeys and butt comment, but I won't state the obvious. ;D

Better yet, since 6-2 is supposed to be the Action News channel, shouldn't that be where they show the funeral?

I understand the coverage on the main channel, but agree there are issues with how the digital channel is used. Besides special reports, it would be nice if they used it when scheduled network specials/sports bump syndicated shows (Millionaire, Jeopardy, Wheel) so at least some fans could see the shows rather than refuse to air them entirely.

The question is, what the heck is 6.2? Sometimes they call it 6BAC Plus, sometimes 6ABC Digital and sometimes "our digital channel." How about picking one 'brand,' and going with it? THEN worry about using it to be something more valuable...unless there's some value I'm missing to years-old public affairs shows.

If anything, and I know I'm not the only one, one of the HD channels could be a "Classic 6" channel. Think: Operation Alphabet, American Bandstand, Captain Noah, Chief Halftown, Wee Willie Weber, Classic Action News segments and/or newscasts, perhaps like what ABC News Now does with "Time Tunnel". It would be nice to see TV in this town pay more homage to its tradition and history.

Something I liked that they did on 6.2 for a while but stopped was rebroadcasting Action News at later times--e.g., the 6 pm news was played at 8. As I'm seldom home in time for evening news, that was very convenient.

They do some good stuff, like the high school football games--it's funny to watch the high-school commentators (and I was one, so I can relate to how big a deal it must be for them), but the rest of the time is a wasteland. (They run Captain Noah on weekends as part of an E/I block.)

That would require them to hire people to run it.

Maybe in the future something will be done. Maybe when the new building opens, and all archives are transitioned over to digital media, they can have a classic 6 automated.

I do like the idea of "Classic 6."

I still think one of the best uses for a subchannel would be "Primetime After Bedtime," a four hour delayed (SD) rebroadcast of the evening's prime-time lineup for those that work split shifts.

Returning to the topic of special programming, I found it interesting today that chs. 3 & 6 covered the latest funeral, while ch. 10 went with regular programming (Deal or No Deal, an infomercial and Days of Our Lives). Ch. 3 had the easiest time with their regular programming: just pushing it over to 57 (not a lot of help for DVR/VCR users who didn't know about the switch in advance, but still a good way to offer options). Channel 6 still amazes me by not using the digital channel for something--ANYTHING--better than they are. Heck, a nightly movie package, some syndie reruns, the season-old Jeopardy reruns (and how about weekend Jeopardy and Wheel??)...any of it would be better than incessant reruns of badly dated programs.

Ch 6 must've been listening. They won't be airing Sgt. Simpson's funeral on ch6, but will air it on ch 6.2 (comcast 245) later today.

Channel 3 is airing the funeral as well.

Over the weekend I ran across a couple of movies running on 6.2, and it seems they are running the syndicated reruns of L O S T on Sunday nights.

They run a few odds and ends that aren't 10 year old Perspective New Jersey (and that's on the good end of the spectrum). I've seen the Canadian series the predated our Cold Case (Cold Squad? The name escapes me now), and the Million Dollar Movie (they still hold onto that name), plus Style By Jury (huh?) and other third-rate stuff. The Lost reruns don't surprise me; the mothership 6.1 runs that and Desperate Housewives in the wee hours Saturday nights.

I thought that might have come about as a result of ABC's announced plans to run the Obama press conference today. Or I heard that somewhere and the source was wrong. Whatever the case may be, I'd not mind at all if the special programs run on 6.1, I'd just ask them to use 6.2 as the place for the bumped programs, akin to CBS3 sometimes shuttling off the CBS daytime shows to CW 57 when they know of a planned special in advance.
