WPWX, WSRB mornings

Ok since tom Joyner was dropped by WVAZ after decades, and WSRB picked it up not by choice but by being paid... then WPWX picked it up, the share for mornings split between 2 stations with the same show doesn't really make sense to me. I feel they can't capitalize on a complete cume or arb for the TJMS with it being split between both stations.

WPWX has the market signal so it makes sense why they put TJMS on it, even though he doesn't fit the format. My biggest question, is if WSRB wants to be syndicated in the mornings, why not introduce Rickey Smiley on WSRB. WGCI is king now once again in hip hop mornings period.

From being a outsider WSRB cant really target the Chicago area with their poor signal. Tom Joyner is on a few Mainstream Urban stations in other markets but with his rich Chicago history its hard to imagine him not on the air. Im not sure how Steve Harvey is doing on WVAZ these days.

So why not WPWX only carry TJMS so he can get his morning numbers tighter instead of having them split between 2 stations, and put on Rickey Smiley in the AM on WSRB.

The problem is WPWX is a Mainstream Urban station. Tom Joyner show is for Urban AC radio. It doesnt fit with Power's format. Just flip it to Urban AC. WVAZ is winning by default. WSRB is suppose to be Talk Radio or Urban Talk Im confused. WSRB has a poor signal and its useless in the Chicago area which would explain why Soul 106.3 never took off.

WSRB "106.3 REAL RADIO" is basically still Urban AC (Classic Hip-Hop and R&B) except 9am-2pm. Radio One tried talk during the middays here in ATL on our Urban AC, but didn't work. I assume Joyner is on both station since both signals are weak but can cover a bigger audience combined.

I think it would be hard for WPWX to beat V103, alot of local heritage on that station.

I agree that the current WSRB is very confused. I listened a while back and I couldn't understand the current format, not much focus, it was like they were just trying to fill time with a jukebox of songs that don't fit too well together. The old WSRB was actually a pretty good urban AC.

WSRB was a good Urban AC station. Im just wondering why CBS never launched a Urban formatted station. 105.9 would be a good choice since this market is already overlap with AC Hot AC and Adult Hits formats. Those rimshots station may bill well but their signals and programing are horrible.

One thing I have learned is CBS is very reserved on starting new urban formatted stations, so most of theirs are inherited (WVEE, WBAV, and WPEG) or have technically shifted from rhythmic over the years (WPGC-FM and WJHM). They'll start up an urban-leaning rhythmic (WZMX, WMBX) before an actual urban formatted station.

That is true. I once had a Sales manager of CBS/Dallas tell me they were trying to get away from formats that were "narrow in focus". They kept those heritage urbans from Granum because they were making money. They quickly found someone to buy KHVN and basically blew up KRBV to see if they could gain some CHR success..

You see how long that CHR success lasted...

KJMZ/KRBV could have survived like its sister station "V-103" WVEE/Atlanta as a full-service urban contemporary station, but CBS was too shortsighted on how competitive Dallas/Fort Worth's urban radio format would be. That format with a few tweaks to accommodate adults 25-40 years would have done in both K-104 and 97.9 the Beat on both the 18-34 and 18-49 demographics because in post-PPM radio it's about captivating the entire audience not just those whom only listen from 3pm to 10pm for the latest hip-hop...

But KRBV was not an Urban station. It was an UAC station. It failed because management did not realize the impact of the tower accident of Oct. 1996 was going to hurt the station more than they thought. The first 3-4 books for KRBV were great. The PD was too worried about K104 and not focusing on KRBV. V100 was an awesome station. The primary demo was adults 25-54. I was there.

I know the history of the 100.3 signal and that KRBV was an UAC. However, I was pointing out the obvious with CBS...

From "the Groove" to "soul 106-3" i always thought their rotation on both stations were much better than V103. Soul was #2 preset when V is #5
