WPXG 21 Concord off the air?

WPXG Concord NH (21 analog, 33 digital) was apparently off-the-air from the weekend until sometime yesterday. They were still off yesterday afternoon (June 26) but were on later last evening when I checked 21. A co-worker, who receives them via their digital channel, said that was off also.

I was just wondering what happened.

That station has a killer signal. I remember picking them up in Boston when they were an independent and then a CBS affiliate.

A lot more could be done with that signal. For example, it would make a killer Fox affiliate. Fox 25 does a LOUSY job of serving New Hampshire both signalwise and with their news reporting. The signal issue will only get worse next year with the close of analog broadcasting. Putting Fox (in particular) on Concord's WPXG would certainly address that subject.

Granite Staters might even get a 3rd NFL game on those Patriots home Sundays!

ION is a waste of electricity - particularly repeated from Boston's 68. I don't think it would be missed if someone pulled the plug and put something more useful on 21!

Heck, a few years ago we seemed to be getting both stations on cable here where I live (Londonderry, NH). No one would notice if the feed started coming directly from 68 while 21 became something else.

Channel 21 couldn't get the advertiser support years ago, I'm not sure if it's there today.

New Hampshire is more populous and affluent today than it was back when CBS was [briefly] tried on 21. It was a great idea that was before its time back then. Now, it IS time to give it a try. Though, I'd recommend an affiliation with Fox as a better bet.

The only way I see Channel 21 getting any support is if they went into a crushingly expensive battle with WMUR to be a serious NH news source. MUR has had the market and sponsors virtually to itself almost forever. Would Fox have the patience to spend a potload of dough to buy WPXG and build it up as a NH affiliate with a decent local news team or at least produce a NH cast out of Boston? I'm sure Paxson could use the cash.

I don't think there's any way Ion could spend the required cash even if it wanted to. Being an FOX O&O would give it money and other resources to compete with WMUR. It's just one scenario.

Who said anything about 21 having to be a Fox O&O?

Well, I never said Ion had to keep the station. I would think they'd sell it to a company that could make it a Fox affiliate.

Considering the length of time it has taken WMUR to become THE N.H. News Source, you would need to:

1. Start out as a billionaire
2. Be patient, old habits die hard.
3. Spend a boatload of money
4. In 10 years, plan on being a millionaire.
