WPYO ORLANDO dancin again

Well in a round about way. Former 953Party WPYO Orlando, now POWER953 the New #1 for Hip Hop is having a freestyle extravaganza weekend. They are promoting and giving away tickets for the upcoming Freestyle Extravaganza Concert featuring Stevie B, George Lamond, Lisa Lisa, Lisette Melendez and Judy Torres among others. I just find this amusing, i didn't see how Hip Hop and Freestyle fit together, but maybe they do
Edited by chrisorlando on 04/15/06 07:40 PM.

I always thought that (the former) '95.3-PARTY' had a weird music mix during its final year or so before it officially became 'POWER-95.3' (on January 05th 2004). Sure they were 'Pure Dance' up until the latter part of 2002, but during much of 2003 they were essentially a 50-50 mix of hip hop / rap and trance / techno. As 2003 grew on the hip hop / rap had increased past 75% of the time, and the trance / techno was barely noticeable. The end of the 'PARTY' was evident.

they were never pure dance. always hip hop, freestyle, dance.

Correct. At their peak they were 50/50 Hip/Dance. They were modeled after Party 105 Long Island, and the older sound of Power 96 Miami.

I must have been listening to them at the right time then because I remember them to be 'Pure Dance' early on in 2002. Maybe they were having one of their 'Pure Dance' weekends. I live en Miami so I only visit Orlando during occasional weekends during the year. I just looked at a one-hour block of actual music that they played during the 1 PM hour on a Wednesday in October 2001 and it's all dance music. That includes trance, techno, and dance remixes of pop hits.

I was in Orlando four years ago and I think they actually were just dance. I've been there a smattering of times since and I know I've heard it when it was taking on hip-hop in addition to dance.
______________

I dont see any Dance songs on thier Last Song Played on POWER 95.3 so it still hip hop all the way...

Hardest thing is "pure dance" can mean so much different to all people. Some consider a pop remix as dance, others cringe. Others consider varing degrees of Hip Hops as pure dance. Some accept ballads, others don't. So it is nice when people explain what pure dance is to them.

But as far as you, might have been a special weekend. Or at time when they were heavily dance. Can you list that one hour you were discussing? Curious to see what you were listening to
______________

Having lived in Orlando from the infancy of this station in early 2000, it was never purely dance but mainly dance....sometimes the word dance is way to broad though because anything having an uptempo beat say over 100bpm+ can be classified as dance, as many would classify say Bubba Sparxxx-Miss New Booty as a dance song these days...i wouldn't but some will as many clubs play hip hop and yes you can dance to it, so i guess that's where the argument lies.

WVYB Daytona Beach 103.3 VYB was an awesome CHR back when it came on the air in 97 now more mainstream...Florida back in the 90's and early 2000's was the place to be for radio, both central and south...it certainly has gone downhill to nearly zilth these days.

A big size of the freestyle audience has moved on to Hip Hop or Latin music.Orlando has a sizeable population of former New Yorkers who grew up on freestyle especially if they are of Hispanic heritage between the ages of 25-40.This is part of Party's target audience.Btw,the Freestyle Extravaganza tour kicks of in NYC on 4/20 and they are promoting the concert on KTU, Mega(Spanish)and Mix(adult dance). That's a broad stretch of musical taste.

OK - GREAT - I thought my MASSIVE Memory was playing tricks on me here, but you remember it ('95.3-PARTY') as a dance station as well early on (2001 into 2002). I was beginning to doubt my own memory when a few of my fellow posters on here insisted that it was never a full dance station. I remember spending two and three and four day weekends up there in Orlando back then and listening to it non-stop (morning, noon, and night) and all I heard was trance, techno, house, breakbeats, and occasional dance remixes of the current pop hits of the time. That's my personal definition of 'Pure Dance', but perhaps it's not other people's definition of it. Once we got into 2003 'PARTY' had been tinkered with in that it was a 50-50 mix of the dance music that I described above - and hip hop and rap as well. It was more like 75% hip hop and rap later on in 2003. I don't consider hip hop and rap as dance music, but I would like to put on the record that I love both styles of music (in addition to rock and pop). In January of 2004 'PARTY' became 'POWER' and it was 'Pure Hip Hop & Rap'.

Now that I've gotten that out of the way I'd like to add that one of my favourite techno hits from that wonderful era was DJ Brad Smith's "Return To Ibiza" - a track that our own 'PARTY-93.1' aqui en el Sur de Florida played (too) briefly and then gave up on. When that track was on '95.3-PARTY' I used to crank it up as loud as I possibly could. It sounded totally awesome despite the weak static-filled 3,000 watt signal of 'PARTY' that barely reached Walt Disney World.

One of my favorite dance stations back in 2000.They were instrumental in breaking new music from Alice Dee Jay and Sonique among others.Sonique's first stop in the US was in Orlando thanks to Party 95.3

I see your point. I considered (last year's) "Lose Control" by Missy Elliott, Ciara, & Fatman Scoop as a dance song (because of the way that it sounded), but I would not consider "Ms. New Booty" as a dance song (because it's too slow). I consider "S.O.S. (Rescue Me)" by Rihanna, "Hips Don't Lie" by Shakira & Wyclef Jean, and "Pump It" by The Black Eyed Peas as dance songs. Other dance fans may not feel the same as I do about them. 'Dance Music' is a broad term, and everyone's viewpoints are different as far as what it is to them.

You know what was a really awesome station back in 1993 and 1994 - and they played a tremendous amount of Eurodance music at the time - 107.1-WA1A out of Melbourne (Florida). That's when I really started to get into the entire European dance music scene. There was so much great music from back then on the radio.

You are right. And a big reason is, because they have no choice on it due to what is offered on the FM band.

For most, but not all, there is a "default" preset since their music is not offered anywhere.
______________

Re: WPYO ORLANDO dancin (back then)

We rented houses over on 27 north of I-4 and the signal wasn't that bad. The location of the transmitter hurt it being up in Apopka.

The first time I heard the station it was by accident flipping through my personal radio. The only tune I remember them playing was that funky remix of Nelly Furtado - Turn off the Light. I only remember dance tunes, but back then I didn't know much about dance tunes. I returned in 2003 and if I remember correctly they already were mixing in some hip-hop.

Was there another dance friendly station besides XL in Orlando before Party? I distinctly remember hearing this dance tune that sounded something like Sonique - Feels So Good and Pimpsmackers - Gates of Mind being played on some station back before Party was around.
______________

You may have been listening to 933 FLZ,,, They put a pretty good signal into Orlando, except in the Downtown area.... FLZ has some really good Weekend Mixshows, pretty heavy on Dance.

I know that in 2003 for about 3 months 'PARTY' (in Orlando and Miami) were playing "Gates Of (Open) Mind" by Sterbinszky & Tranzident Ft. Jewls Vs. Pimpsmackers. I liked that song a lot. It had great vocals and a great beat. It was cool trance.

Sonique's "It Feels So Good" was MASSIVE during much of 2000. Virtually every CHR-POP, CHR-Rhythmic, and Dance station was playing it in heavy rotation during the year. Even some courageous HOT-A.C. stations picked up on it. It's still a popular recurrent on many stations today.

Besides XL-106.7 (and 'PARTY') you may have been listening to a lot of dance music back then on 93.3-FLZ out of Tampa which carries a strong signal right along I-4 up to and even past the tall buildings of Downtown Orlando.

Re: WPYO ORLANDO dancin (back then)

Yeah, who knows what I listened too back then. It likely was 95.3 because this all was after they went on the air in 1998. For some reason I thought they only went on the air around 2001, I guess not. Oh and I read some article that said when they debuted it was all dance music.

BTW, Major, I still miss the good old days where the chart was all dance. I've been having some fun the past few hours listening to some of the tunes listed in the chart in its early dance period. I found quite a few that I had never heard before.
______________

I lived in Orlando for 15 years.. and it was NEVER a Pure Dance Station. It was always Dance, Hip-Hop, and Freestyle... On the weekends they have the Sat. Night Mix Factory.

95.3 Party will be my all time fav FM radio station.. I loved it.
