WPYO Power 95.3

Never listened to them before, don't care for the urban format but out of curiosity gave a listen. Their website just changed in the past few minutes. Now they're calling themselves Orlando's #1 for all the hits. It's amazing how a new station all of a sudden calls themselves #1. Looks like they are trying to pick up where the old AMP 101.9 left off.

Actually surprised it took them this long. Are they gonna pull a 101.5 in Tampa and call themselves hot? Interesting note: a lot of IHeart top 40s call themselves power. Like power 961 in Atlanta. Just something I thought about.

Except iHeart's Top 40 in Orlando is XL 106.7 because... WXXL.

Or they can pull a 97.3 Miami and call themselves Hits.

I'm quite surprised that Cox made that move, although I'm satisfied listening to XL 106.7 on the iHeartRadio app. I would've thought of Entercom flipping 101.9 back to Jamz after their CBS Radio merger, but instead flipped to Alternative, like the stations in New York and Dallas. This now leaves 104.5 The Beat (which is a translator) as the only Urban station in the Orlando market.

A little OT but what the heck is cox doing with 94.5? One minute we are hearing Humble by Kendrick Lamar then we are hearing early 80s RNB????????? I don't know man. LOL I think that does more bad than good. I do find it interesting though.

Star 94.5 has been doing this forever! They play some currents, but the R&B gold goes back about 40 years. In their Adult Urban format you can hear Childish Gambino, Charlie Wilson, & Kendrick Lemarr, and have it backed with Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, & Michael Jackson. They will even spike 70’s artists, like Cheryl Lynn or Earth Wind & Fire. It does very well with this approach. When I worked there, it was very well researched, to give it’s target audience exactly what it wants.
