UPDATE:

So is this just a ruse or what? Hmmm...the plot thickens....

Check out 941thebeat.com for details.

-----------------------------------

What I thought rather interesting was the following: I work at a video store. A gentleman pulled up out front in a WQBT jeep, emblazoned with "94.1 The Beat" all over it. He came in and returned a DVD. I asked him what's going on at the station and is there a change coming? The look on his face was priceless. He seemed taken aback that I knew this. He replied yes. I asked about a format flip. He hemmed and hawed and said, "Yeah, I guess." I also asked if he was still going to have a job. He said yes to that. He was a very nice guy and outside of what I asked, I didn't press him. I fully realize that this could be a whole lot of smoke being blown, but I found it funny that I read the initial post here this morning and then this happens.

As for my analysis...

I highly doubt a format flip. Sure, WQBT went down two whole points in the Arbs but I don't see Clear Channel leaving this highly lucrative format. It'll probably be a tweak here and there or a new contest perhaps. Then again, it'd be cool to see Clear Channel launch either an alternative rock station, bring JACK-FM (officially) to Savannah, or try progressive talk here. Okay, I know I'm dreaming here but oh well.

Your thoughts?
Edited by FilmCritic3000 on 08/17/05 11:07 PM.

A big conglomerate like CC flipping one of its Savannah stations to the "JACK" format. I'd like to be proven wrong.

Re: AHA!

I see they put the same logo as Star 94 in Atlanta as one of the choices. It will not be oldies so rule that one out. I do not think that there is enough money in rock radio especially considering the format is covered. The Mix format would be the money maker potential but I kind of think it will be something different than the 4 choices. I would assume the Beat's problem was revenue.

I hope they are it. But from the website looks like Hip Hop is not an option

If I had to bet on which I think they'll go to Solid Rock.

I think they should flip to a Similar Format From Urban to Chr/Rhythmic these 2 formats almost have the Same Playlists but Rhythmic Has a little less R&B in it and Most of the time do not have the Slow Jams(Heartbeats) With it. As far as I know there are NO Chr/Rhythmic Format Stations in Savannah. Isn't JACK-FM an infinity Thing?

But as you noted in another thread, the PD is promoting the changes. That makes a format flip pretty unlikely. It's pretty hard to get a PD to go along with a promotion that costs him his job. And why promote a flip to an audience that will hate the new format?

Someone else guessed a new morning show. That's a good possibility.
Maybe a music repositioning. As you indicate, they don't sound as focused as they should compared to E93 which Beats The Beat every book.

Maybe it's just a new contest which they are hyping.

A major format flip to a non-urban format with the PD promoting it to his current audience? That makes no sense.
______________

If there is a format flip (which I doubt but would love), I'm thinking Variety Hits as either JACK-FM or a clone. I think that all of the logos at the bottom of 941thebeat.com are likely a potpourri effect, in essence all prospective logos present an image of songs that can be played on a Variety Hits station.

But what do I know? More than likely Russ Parr is history on this station and that'll be it. For the sake of Savannah radio, this board, and lively discussion, I certainly hope I'm wrong.
Edited by FilmCritic3000 on 08/18/05 09:24 AM.

Mix could generate more cash, but I can also see it cutting into ratings for two other CC Savannah properties...Kiss & River. So, I'm not so sure about that.

My gut tells me this is a stunt.

Totally forgot about the River but maybe they would relaunch that format on the stronger 94.1 signal and do something else with 98.7fm. The stunt idea does have more merrit now.

Maybe the PD is keeping his job even if the Format Changes. It has happened in the past. Depending on how Flexable he is. I can See Bo Money being the PD of a "mix" 94.1 But Maybe not Solid Rock or Oldies "Unless it's Urban Oldies"

Honestly I think The Beat should Follow WHTA Atlanta Station's Playlist

Can you see him doing "Jack?" :)

Okay, I'll buy that. They could make a format change and keep the pd. But don't you don't think the present audience would be po'd? Why promote it to them? I'm sticking with A) New Morning Show B) Music tightening C) Promotion.

Mostly, I'm betting it's hype over significant change.
______________

From allaccess:

What's up at CLEAR CHANNEL Urban WQBT (94.1)/SAVANNAH? ALL ACCESS hears it's not a format flip, but things could be bright and shiney and wild, soon.

Bright and shiney=?
Wild=?

Do the math...I'll be around at the end of class to collect your papers.

No I don't think I can See Bo Doing "Jack" Not as a Jock anyway. I guess Time will tell. I heard something Interesting on the Beat Today. They JUST started promoting that D4L a Rap Group is having a concert in Savannah Next Thursday(AFTER the Monday Change) and they will have tickets for it. Funny How Can a Station Promote a Concert if they Flipped? They can Flip to a Chr/rhythmic and Still promote this Concert.

Maybe Call themselves the new HOT 94.1 or POWER 94.1 with Star and Bucwild in the Morning.

I listen to Star & Bucwild on Power 105.1 (WWPR) in NYC. Star made
the annoucement this morning that they just picked up a new station
in Savannah, GA. 94.1 "The Beat". This will be their 7th Station.
He did'nt mention anything about the station switching formats. This
show is spreading very quickly. I hear that Dallas, TX is next. Savannah
will hear the show starting Monday (8/22). The show is on in these cities:
1. New York City (Power 105.1)
2. Hartford, CT (Power 104.1)
3. Philadelphia, PA (Power 99)
4. Richmond, VA (106.5 "The Beat")
5. Augusta, GA (Power 107)
6. Miami, FL (103.5 "The Beat")
