WQCD becomes rocker "101.9 RXP" WRXP

... at 4 p.m. today...

I predict another WRFF Philly clone like they've done in Boston and Hartford.
Waiting for "Radio 101.9" to start any minute.

they could call it "The X" that'd be pretty bad ass... "The New 101 The X"

and they've kicked off with "Rock and Roll"/Lou Reed
FAB!!! now play some Sex Pistols, Ramones and New York Dolls and I'll be impressed...
visit the old WPIX FM "new wave/punk' library and play "Max's Kansas City,1976" by Wayne County and I'll flip my wig

I loved the old smooth jazz format. But at least they replaced it with something decent (at least at first glance).

It's a rock and a hard place thing for me because I love both formats.

"101.9 RXP."

God, this just reeks of WPIX-FM...

But the reason they made this move can be summed up in three letters: PPM.

Right now, the jock on the air is going only by the name "Brian", and he told the audience that the last song he just played (R.E.M. - "Supernatural Superserious"), he wasn't even supposed to play yet, because it hasn't been released, and he's really hearin' it from the record companies right now. You rebel, you!

if they want this station to survive, they need to go Modern or Active, and if its Active none of the slower classics. and for the love of god, NO U2, No Nickleback, No U2, No Hinder, and No U2.

They'll have to really program this well to get any traction in New York. It has never been a market that supports much in the way of rock on FM. Yes, it may be a great suburban format, but they still need to get listeners in the city to make it. That could be difficult with this format.

I agree with the poster who pointed out PPM as the reason for the move. However, as the kinks are ironed out of PPM, the advantage that rock stations seem to now have will fade away [as an aside, I think that AC stations will still prosper]. And, New York's shifting demographics do not favor a triple-A or "intelligent rock" format. Yes, they'll bet on great Power Ratios - and they may get them. But you still need ratings. We'll see if they come to pass.

I remain skeptical of this move, but do wish Emmis luck. Gotta give them credit for trying something different....even if it flies in the face of conventional wisdom.

Quoted from the website

WRXP is the first radio station in the world to debut "Supernatural Superserious."

Maybe they are the "Releaser" or got Permission to play it.

Maybe CD101.9.com might start an online stream.

I think they should have honestly went Top 40 before Pulse Launched.

I guess someone's been reading my months of posts here about a 'roots' NY rock station that celebrates Lou Reed, Blondie, Elvis Costello, and (they better get on) The New York Dolls, Wayne County, The Ramones and Cherry Vanilla, or it just ain't a New York Rock Scene station...sounds real good so far, though...

CD101.9 will continue as an HD2 station, apparently. No word about an online stream, a la Jack: http://www.cd1019.com/site_20/home.aspx

A lot of people are discussing the probability of the new rock format succeeding (or not) in NYC, but it'll be interesting to see where CD101.9's listeners end up as well. Lite? Fresh? CBS-FM? Other stations?

who saw this one coming..?
It'll be interesting to see if someone else flips to sj.
Maybe 92.3? CBS would have nothing to lose. Their certainly not cutting it with rock.

Ironic that Emmis would flip to rock when the existing rock station under performs.
I really can't see how K-Rock will stick around now.
