Well, considering the fact that I was a Program Director for 4 years (in a small/medium market, but a PD nonetheless) I wouldn't quite consider myself a "wannabe."
I know where they're trying to go with the hot in the day cool in the night thing, but ultimately I think it will hurt them. Along with the fact they have no real personalities.
It's not a matter of "Real Radio" programming. One of my philosophies as a PD was CONSISTENCY. You've got to be the same radio station no matter what time of the day people tune in. People tune in because of that...they have to know exactly what they're gong to hear no matter when they tune in. Here you have a woman who is not familiar with the station and tunes in during the day----she likes the music selection (which is a very good one, I have to say)---she and her husband are going out at night and she tells him about this great new radio station---they tune it in and zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz....or worse, they hear a hockey game! They tune it out.
This consistency thing works. Look at the top 5 radio stations in this market---All of them consistent.
While I'm on the subject, Magic93 does this "Family Friendly" thing very well without being bland, boring and monotonous. The woman on in the morning can be entertaining and informative without putting people back to sleep. I would never hire a Morning Show host who incorporated nonsense and dumb jokes. I would also never hire this woman. The true answer lies in between.
But what do I know, I'm just a "Wannabe." I saw in the want ads where QFM was looking for a PD, maybe now it's time for me to take a cut in pay and get back into radio.
