The ratings are out today. Uh....WQFM is down. Way down. To a 0.6! Jeez, I've been rooting for them and Chris Barnes because, quite simply, it's something a little different. Now I don't know what to think. I mean, they might have done just as well by playing the sounds of crickets chirping. Perhaps they didn't go far enough with the format or maybe they went too far. Is Barnes really THAT much of a turn off? Is he not even a factor at all in this huge decline? Honestly, I'm a bit stunned at the 12 plus rating.

The ratings speak loudly and clearly. The potential listeners do not like the product which they present. Chris who? I was never impressed. Back to my iPod. ...sorry!

I am not surprized...WQFM....is missing something...and I just can figure it out....the station does not hold my interest...Perhaps because all the stations are beginning to sound the same.

Very little imaging, a lackluster, non definitive music mix as well as an air staff that needs development. Plus, this format followed a 9 year oldies programming effort that was consistent, and easily understood if not spectacular.

P.S. I still think Barnes is the rock this church can be built on.

Hey thanks for reminding me...that's what's missing...the oldies...an nice place to turn when you want to hear something different!

QFM is nothing special, no reason to turn the dial. Barnes doesn't help. However, if T-S sticks with the format and continues with the promotion, something may happen. It may be too quick to hit the panic button.

For what it's worth, I believe that train is on the right track. It's just that this set of tracks hasn't been used in a while. There are shrubs covering part of the tracks, and not too much coal feeding the train's engine. Oh, and the engine isn't a newer model and can't attain high rates of speed. Did I mention the crew? OK crew but not a strong enough pullman. I think you get the idea.

It's not Barnes, he's not bad. The station and its' format simply is too bland. This station sounds similar to 2 or 3 others in the market. The format was originally a good idea but clearly is not going to work. That's the problem. You can piss countless dollars away on advertising and even get good guys who are entertaining to listen to in Barnes, but if the product itself is "iffy" at best, you need to then go back to the drawing board and start over from scratch format-wise. I always thought Shamrock could have done better then QFM. They have alot of smart, talented, and good people over there. I'm a bit disappointed at what ended up happening when QFM was launched.

What I find interesting is that we all are quick to blame corporate ownership for everything bad in radio today, yet here's a locally and family owned signal going in the tank. Yeah, I know, the whole group ain't goin', but QFM's future isn't exactly bright.

Personally, I think getting rid of oldies and Mike Neff really hurt them bad, and they weren't counting on that at all. They felt they could take his respectable numbers and build on them, not even considering how much audience they'd bleed when they took Neff and the format away. Bad decision all the way around. Trying to get back over two-thirds of the listeners you threw away is about as close to impossible as you'll get.

Particularly since they seem to have taken the old "fingers crossed, let's make a little bit of noise about this to kick it off and then hope lightning strikes without us having to spend another dime" approach to getting the word out.

Of course then there's the nebulously defined format...

neb·u·lous (nby-ls)
adj.
1. Cloudy, misty, or hazy.
2. Lacking definite form or limits; vague: nebulous assurances of future cooperation.
3. Of, relating to, or characteristic of a nebula.

Unfair use of a thesarus, but very appropriate

Tom Bass told me via e-mail that the oldies format was a white elephant that needed to go a long time ago.I feel that the 2+numbers they were getting wasn't enough for them.I really myself personally fell in love with oldies 92 and 100!I'm probably the only loyal listener from those days but that's just me.
