WQHS 61.6 shut down

Digi TV - the diginet seen on WQHS TV 61.6 featuring mostly British programming - shut down operations.

With that channel 61.6 now no longer exists as the station shut the subchannel down.

Not the first time something like this happened in Cleveland.

In the early 2010s, This TV aired on WUAB 43.3, but when it moved to WBNX 55.3, WUAB opted to shut the subchannel down (though it has since been fired back up again, when in early 2020 the Gray TV owned Circle network debuted)

61.5 will likely be next, as their contract with Dabl is set to expire sometime this month, making the network exclusive to WOIO. No word if WQHS will replace it with something else, as the other diginets that Univision has contracts with are seen elsewhere on their respective O&O stations. (Scripps, Inyo & Tegna)

The question is, with bandwidth being freed up from losing Digi-TV, Dabl, and eventually Ion Mystery in 2024, will WQHS become a host for someone's ATSC 1.0 channels once an ATSC 3.0 pilot station is announced?

It's nice to see some of the duplicated diginets going away, hopefully to be replaced with something else that is not currently available.

Looks like 61.5 got deactivated on February 14, and took Dabl along with it.
Correct.

But remember, Dabl also is on WOIO 19.3 (where it still airs), so all this move did was eliminate a duplication.

61.4 still airs Ion Mystery, which is a double down with WVPX 23.4, so odds are that too will go bye-bye down the road.

In other news Spectrum has added WJW 8.3 on Channel 980 and WJW 8.4 on Channel 981 showing on cable box side yet to be added on App side. All 3 subchannels are showing in 16x9.

Interesting. I guess they couldn't provide the proper aspect ratio to the cable companies with their old encoders.

^The video on 61.6 is encoded in MPEG4 instead of the typical MPEG2, so some devices, partially older ones, will not be able to decode it. (Not like you're missing much of anything🤪).

On my set it appears as an audio only channel.

Anyone up for some Home Shopping radio?

Oh, God! I almost ended up actually working for a station like that in Florida. It eventually turned into HSN. I was told that they had a client that couldn't pay his advertising bill and he somehow ended up with, basically, a semi truck of electric mixers [if I remember correctly] from him that they went ahead and pitched on air to their listeners at least hoping to make back what he owed them. They made a crap-ton of money and dumped their format and became shopping radio. I just remember walking in to apply at the station and they literally had almost every space in the station filled up with boxes and boxes of mixers and the PD just asked if I was any good at describing appliances on air and he was ready to hire me on the spot. He almost had me sold on doing it but then I came to my senses and skedaddled out of there ASAP. Just told him, Sorry, but my heart is set on spinning records. If I had known what it was going to turn into.......
I listened to them for about 15 minutes after I drove off and it just sounded so sad to me.

It's also on 26.4 WUEK if you can receive it (and one of the Channel 3 subs I think)!
3.6 to be precise, with QVC2 on 3.7

Here's where home shopping resides on the main full power channels in town:

WKYC 3.6 - Shop LC
WKYC 3.7 - QVC2
WEWS 5.5 - HSN
WEWS 5.6 - QVC
WVPX 23.5 - Jewelry TV
WVPX 23.6 - QVC
WVPX 23.8 - HSN
WQHS 61.6 - Shop LC

I'm not gonna go through all the low power stations, because they frequently change and mix and match, but needless to say all the networks I already listed also appear on LP channels like 20, 26, 28, and 41

2 words - cha-ching.

HC2 rarely, if ever, flips those shopping networks. The infomercial networks (OnTV4U) however do occasionally get flipped if they need space for another network, but in the end, each of their stations has at least one (usually 2) of those networks.

1 word - BORING.
While the hosts on QVC and HSN make everything (even cheap garbage) sound like it's the best thing out there, I have to say that the hosts on Shop LC have to be the absolute worst. I had it on last night while analyzing 61.6 and they were so awful that they could put anyone to sleep. Not sure how they manage to sell anything with them.
